'Pokemon Sun' and 'Pokemon Moon' Trademarks Filed!

The overall shape of the head is more similar to that of cardinal over a woodpecker or osprey.
True.

Other birds with similar feet to woodpeckers/ospreys:
Owls
Parrots
Cuckoos
Mousebirds
Cuckoo Rollers
Swifts
Turacos (to a degree)

Out of those, I'd say mousebirds, parrots (some) and turacos fit the quiff best.

I think it's a Fletchling with small changes to the art indicating some cosmetic stylistic changes which may be happening to pokemon.

I want my own Seadra mansion, but I think a Slowbro mansion would be better.

I'm not sure... Why would it be coloured black/grey, have a white face, get given different toes AND a quiff?

Y'all don't know how much I've screamed.

I think that model's either Fletchling or a woodpecker-like new Pokémon, it'll be interesting to see! I'm a huge fan of the art direction this generation is taking too, it's like XY but kinda... more equatorial? It feels like something like that anyway. I'm so hype!

It looks more urban, as there seems to be an inn or a series of shops, as well as more cars.

The bird isn't Fletchling! It's a woodpecker, because it really has too many differences for it TO be Fletchling!

That was the first place that came to my mind after I saw the pic with the building and the square... It's the most famous casino in Monte Carlo (left) and a super luxurious hotel (right)... Monte Carlo is in Europe in Monaco...

This is the Raffle's Hotel in Singapore, which just so happens to have a very tropical climate.

I saw a press release on this site saying IVs were going away, as well as abilities, and the steel, dark and fairy type.

OMG CONFIRMED HYPE HYPE :)

That was Water Pokemon Master (trolling) and just talking about the virtual console games.

The original games did have IVs, but you didn't have any way of manipulating them. http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Individual_values

True, I forgot that. Still, it was only between 0-15.

With the Gen 1 compatibility, there are a few possibilities.

1. No Guard Fissure Machamp

This would be fun. They might change No Guard to not include OHKOs, they might just not care that this exists, or they might do the next thing:

2. New Abilities for Pokemon Transferred from Gen 1

Gen III introduced abilities, Gen IV introduced new secondary abilities for some Pokemon, and Gen V introduced hidden abilities. Gen VI was different, but it still found ways to give older Pokemon new abilities: Megas and just slapping them on like in Gen IV (think Competitive).

Sun/Moon could have its own way of distributing new abilities to old Pokemon, and that way could be by transferring from Gen 1 VC games. Sure, this would only apply to 151 Pokemon, but it would be cool since otherwise I'm assuming they'd just get whatever Ability #1 is when sent over, which is BO-ring.

1. OHKO moves are not allowed in most competitive circles, so I don't think they'll change No Guard.

2. I like that ideia.

I guess Gamefreak and Nintendo would really consider adding more languages if the Chinese versions sell good, and I'm sure they will.

BTW I bet the new games will be of the 7th gen while including Kalos.

Well, in Portugal, I think XY sold really well. They were sold out the day they were launched in the store where I went to get my game (luckily I had pre-ordered it).

To add to the conversation about Pokemon Bank, it might be worth noting that the Pokemon website doesn't say that the Pokemon from RBY won't be able to be transferred to XYORAS at all; it only says that they won't be able to be transferred directly.

Unless the change in the pokémon data allows them to then be transfered to XY/ORAS, I don't think so. Also, they stated pokémon from XY/ORAS can also only be transfered to Sun/Moon through PokéBank, meaning no trading between games. This usually means a one way transfer. If the data structure in SM is different, if you send the pokémon from Gen 6 to SM, I think you'll still be able to store them in PokéBank, but maybe you won't be able to send them again to XY/ORAS. Or maybe it works like the Time Capsule in Gen 2, but I don't know.

As you can see, their logos are very "Creative"
Pokemon Moon is actually a triple-overlay of the Dark symbol from the TCG:

As you can see, I outlined it here.

The Pokemon sun logo is also an overlay of some symbol, but we've never seen it before
Light Type Possibility?

Oh, right, the genwun transfer option.

Well, the special stat is not a problem, as they've done it for RBY->GSC already.
Same for giving them a gender. Although the gender in gen2 was dependant on the same values that determined the IVs (in a very different way than gen3+), so it might be a problem unless gender mechanics have changed in the last 2 generations (I don't think they have).
The IVs could be multiplied by 2 and have a random plus/minus 1 factor or something. Or perhaps the random part re-rolled until it matched the assigned nonexistent gender...uhhhh nvm.
The ability... well they could simply put a rule of: if it comes from a gen1 game, it gets Ability #1, deal with it. Simple as that.

But the actually interesting information is that this will only work towards Sun&Moon.
Because that implies a new format for pokemon data, that they'll change them to directly, rather than going through the generations step by step.
It might therefore mean that going to the new format will also mean simplifying gen3-6 pokemon data in the process.

And that reminds me of some interview with GF, wehre they said they want to make things simpler... which I hope applies only to very specific things like this, rather than them cutting out some core mechanics we're used to now.

The whole "transfer to Sun and Moon" talk though, is sort of disappointing.
I got the wrong idea about PokeBank. I thought the point was that it would eliminate the need for any transfers and blur the lines between generations themselves.
So that, say you caught a gen1-6 Pokemon in a gen7 game, you could put it into the Bank, and if it didn't have some gen7 move or ability, you could even take it back to gen6, the same way a Groudon with Preicipice blade from ORAS cannot go to XY, but it can as soon as the move is removed.
So that's not going to be the case. Well okay.

There's no way that they would want to do a generation-by-generation validation system. It would create too much chaos down the line. Gen 8 -> Gen 6 would be even harder. Additionally, if they added new attributes to a Pokemon, it would get erased when it is sent to a newer generation. They might be able to upscale each generation's Pokemon, but I don't think GameFreak would prioritize users sending a fraction of their Pokemon to an older game.

Welp, as a long time reader who rarely comments, please be kind. :'D ...Also long post warning, sorry!

I run a Pokémon art group based on a region we made up, and for about two-ish years I've been kinda worried that the new G7 games were going to be based on Hawaii... and while this announcement did nothing to allay my fears, I figure you guys may at least find them interesting or exciting.

I've been thinking the new region is based on Hawaii thanks to a number of hints about the place.
The first hint was the 'Strange Souvenir' found in XY, where the icon art is clearly a Tiki, and it's clearly stated that it's not from any region that currently existed as of XY. So that points to a new region, and the Tiki itself suggesting that it's a Pacific nation. Of all the Pacific nations, New Zealand and Hawaii are really the only two 'big enough' to host a region - Being a NZer myself, I can definitely say the Strange Souvenir does not match Maori carvings, but it does match native Hawaiian style quite well.

Next point, http://www.pokebeach.com/2015/08/flowers-in-pokemons-future WPM posted this a while back, with 'flowers' given as the cryptic clue. Many nations are known for/by flowers, so this could be a bit of a stretch, and Hawaii in particular, you always think of the Hibiscus as one of the first symbols of the place.

Third, the Sun/Moon logos - To me, the Sun looks an awful lot like a compass, and Moon, while a little more abstract, seems to be an eclipse/lens flare and reminiscent of a sextant, both tools for sea navigation. All Polynesian cultures were renowned seafarers, and navigated with the Sun/Moon and also the stars, which are present in both eng/jpn logos behind the main text.

Fourth, the concept art shown in the teaser - We have a Yellow Firetruck! With a Blastoise on the back! And I'm not gonna' lie, that's awesome! But there's not many places where firetrucks aren't red, and Hawaii is one that uses yellow trucks.
Also on the concept art, the lovely big building they showed, seems to me to look like either an aquarium or a museum with all the water Pokémon silhouettes drawn on it, but the palms trees and building style making me think of a Pokémon version of the 'Iolani Palace https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ʻIolani_Palace

Annnd lastly, that bird! Going on all the all previous Hawaii ideas I'm running on, I think the little guys looks like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-crested_cardinal A bird introduced to Hawaii, and apparently rather common now. He certainly fits the bill with that crest of his.

At any rate, I could be totally and wildly off track with all of this, but I hope it's something you find interesting to ponder in the meantime. :'D

I like that idea, ittybittyskitty. Volcanion would also make more sense in Hawaii then in Europe, but they probably will release it for XYORAS before then--maybe not, though! There's nothing set in stone saying they have to release Volcanion when the movie comes out; I mean, I'm assuming they won't be releasing Magearna at that time, so why not just save Volcanion, too? Don't take this with too much conviction, though--it just seemed like another possible connection to Hawaii.

I highly doubt there's going to be a new type, Light, Sound, or Cosmic otherwise. We just had Fairy in Gen 6 given to us. Like many said before me, Light is already covered in Fire, Grass (Solarbeam), Psychic, Electric and even Fairy itself (Moonblast). Cosmic would be hard to implement, because against what would Cosmic be good against, be weak against, and have resistances to? I personally wouldn't know. Light would have been great, if it wasn't for the Fairy type. It would have fit the whole Sun and Moon theme and title. Even though I'm very sure we are not going to get a brand new type so soon again, I have learned now that GF is unpredictable and can't really be associated with any sort of set patterns, whether its release of games, the type of games, or anything else.

I actually think you might be on to something here. Just checked the links out myself and it makes perfect sense. On that, I'm pretty open to the possibility of a tropical region myself. It also has a variety of wildlife from which Pokémon can be created from, such as a dolphin, which a lot of people want. Not saying there's going to be a dolphin Pokémon, but the potential is there. We will see in the coming months.

Also, I have been watching the trailer a few times, and is it just me, or is the music pretty catchy? I tend to think so. I also love the whole count-down style from which they go from the very first games to the latest released, before going to Sun and Moon. It would have been more perfect if there was a gameplay trailer starting after that, but oh well, can't have it all.

Hawaii and Spain do seem to be the top two popular choices for location inspirations. Either way sounds fun.

That's a connection that I hadn't thought of, tbh, but it does make sense! Hawaii's islands were all formed when fire met water, a process that's still ongoing on the Big Island with Kilauea spewing lava constantly for decades.

Spain IMO is a bit too close and wasn't Hawaii done in B2W2?

I'd rather something like Italy.

Spain is viable because it can easily tie in with Kalos. France and Spain are some of the biggest rivals in the world. Kalos was at war with another region that was never named. Kalos is based off France. This new region could very well be Kalos's enemy.
