Watch some youtube videos on how to make a simple banner. That helps me a lot, or take a classs like I did.

Never knew there were classes for that :D

A 'simple' banner shouldn't really need a tutorial I think... it's essentially a rectangle with er, pics inside.

I am still deciding on it, and I am trying to learn more about it.

It's nicknamed 'the poor man's photoshop'. That should say enough. Aside from that... Gimp has all your basic features, more than you'll ever need in your case (a typical digital "art" usually just needs layer support, blend support, a good variety of brushes, and selection tools in addition to your basics like flood fill, resizing, etc.)

I do have to warn you though from my personal experience. Gimp's tablet support is dodgy. I lucked out with my current Wacom Bamboo Pen and got everything working... the previous tablet I had couldnt get pressure sensitivity in Gimp and so I spent 1 year drawing with no pressure sensitivity in Gimp (which was the reason I got SAI as a fallback measure)

That bold kind of got me worried, especially if Photoshop is better. What do you use?

I have gimp and SAI and photoshop, but photoshop isn't installed (I got the whole adobe CS as part of a student package with a laptop I purchased in uni) and SAI is only marginally used (I try to stick to 1 program as far as possible because they are not exactly inter-compatible)

Unquestionably, photoshop is better (I even mentioned something like that earlier), but the exact reasons why it's better than Gimp is with regards to things so high-level that it wouldn't apply to anyone who isn't an industry professional.

For instance, Gimp lacks CMYK+ support, which photoshop has. I'll bet 8 out of 10 people don't even know what CMYK is.

But at the end all that matters is that you use what you need, not what people say is the best or the most powerful or whatever. And like I said, Gimp is more than you'll ever need. It certainly was that way for me. Most people I know of use a SAI/Photoshop combination (they start in SAI, and then post-process in photoshop)

This is my desktop. The wallpaper, and those black icons you see on the left were all made with Gimp (yes gimp can make .ico files). If you saw that thread I posted with the BW mascot wallpapers, the reshiram and zekrom there were both drawn in Gimp too.

So really you have nothing to be worried about (except maybe getting the tablet to work...)

Hmm.. looks nice. Might download right now.

Gimp sure works well if you are choosing to go for banners etc, if you want something even complicated you can try for Photoshop CS4 Portable. Last time I checked it was for free. It has more than what you would ever need to make banners and wild stuff.

Of course I don't think any program could beat the PS CS5's image ability though but that costs too much.

Ah ok then but I don't want to spend any money.

BUMP

I forgot to mention this, but I got GIMP a week ago. I am still "toying" around with it so I can see what I can do with it. Art will not be coming for a few days.

It would be preferable to work with keyboard shortcuts to your preferences.

In my GIMP, I set
Q = paintbrush
W = eraser
E = zoom in
D = zoom out

That alone makes it very convenient for me because essentially the 4 most common functions I use are on the left of the keyboard. Airbrush (A) and Smudge (S) are already in comfortable positions so I don't need to touch them.

Also recommended that you do a custom brush setting for lineart. Set the size, opacity, colour and sensitivity that you want, then save it (the save button is at the bottom of the toolbox).
