Welcome to Pokebeach’s Alola Location Guide. This thread will serve as a guide for catching Pokemon in Sun and Moon and filling up your Pokedex. Note that Alola Dex Pokemon can show up in several dexes, the whole Alola Dex which contains every Pokemon in the region, and various subdexes for each island. Each Pokedex the Pokemon shows up in will be listed.
Encounter Methods
Tall Grass- Throughout the routes of Alola, you’ll find various patches of grass that are growing higher than the rest of the ground. If you walk through these patches of grass, you will eventually battle a wild Pokemon. Note that certain patches of grass can have different Pokemon than others on the route, so try various patches on the route.
Version exclusives- Some Pokemon will only appear in one version or the other, and you will need to trade Pokemon. The following Pokemon are version exclusives:
- Rufflet/Braviary (Sun only) : Vullaby/Mandibuzz (Moon only)
- Cottonee/Whimsicott (Sun only) : Petilil/Lilligant (Moon only)
- Passimian (Sun only) : Oranguru (Moon only)
- Cranidos/Rampardos (Sun only) : Shieldon/Bastiodon (Moon only)
- Tirtouga/Carracosta (Sun only) : Archen/Archeops (Moon only)
- Turtonator (Sun only) : Drampa (Moon only)

- Solgaleo (Sun only) : Lunala (Moon only)

Day and Night- Some Pokemon will only appear at certain times of the day. In Sun and Moon, there are two times of day, day and night, and when each one occurs depends on your version. In Sun, Day occurs from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and Night occurs from 6:00pm to 6:00 am. In Moon, it’s reversed, Day occurs from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am and Night occurs from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. After beating the game, if you bring Solgaleo or Lunala to the Altar of the Sunne/Moone during the Day/Night, you can find an Ultra Wormhole that takes you to an alternate universe based on the other version. This reverses the day/night schedule to the other versions, so if you find the other version’s day/night schedule more convenient, this can be useful (and no, you can’t catch the other version’s exclusives in the alternate universe sadly).
Rustling Spots- Occasionally you’ll see a Pokemon rustling around in the overworld, sometimes moving around and chasing you. If you bump into these Pokemon, you can battle and catch them. Often times rarer Pokemon can be found this way.
Surfing- Once you gain the Lapras Paddle ability for your Ride Pager in Brooklet Hill, you can ride Lapras across various bodies of water throughout Alola. You can encounter water dwelling Pokemon this way simply by moving around in the water.
Fishing- After completing Lana’s Trial in Brooklet Hill, she gives you a Fishing Rod that allows you to catch Pokemon that live underwater. The Fishing Rod can be used by pressing A in designated areas and then pressing A again when you get a bite.
Rippling Water- Sometimes you see a ripple in the water above a fishing spot. If you fish at that spot, you can find rarer Pokemon than through normal fishing.
SOS Battle- On each island, after you complete your first trial there, Pokemon will start calling on other Pokemon to help them in battle. These Pokemon will have higher IVs and a higher chance of a HA and of being shiny, but some species can also call other species of Pokemon to help them. See our SOS Guide here for more details.
