Contest PokéBeach Create-A-Card: January 2018 - Grass Types ~ Update: Image-Based Finally Up!

We're having difficulties with the image-based judging again this month, in that it's pretty much done but I don't actually have a copy of it, and R3 hasn't been around for me to get a copy off him. We're holding out just so we don't have to redo all the judging, but that might end up happening in the future. Otherwise, this is just a placeholder for the image-based, and text-based can be found in the post below this one~

It was exciting to see such a diverse range of entries, this month! Even more exciting was to see many fresh and returning faces, all of which did remarkably well across the board. Looking forward to seeing what everyone cooks up for February. ^.^

Virizion HP: 110 - Grass
Basic Pokémon
virizion.gif

NO. 640 Grassland Pokémon HT: 6'7 WT: 440.9 lbs.

Ability - Sword of Justice

This Pokémon's attacks do 20 more damage (after Weakness and Resistance) for each [F] Energy card attached to this Pokémon.

[G][C][C] Whirlwind Blade 80
Switch this Pokémon with 1 of your Benched Pokémon. Then, switch your opponent's Active Pokémon with 1 of your opponent's Benched Pokémon.

Weakness: [R] x 2
Resistance: None
Retreat: [C]

Pokédex: Its head sprouts horns as sharp as blades. Using whirlwind-like movements, it confounds and swiftly cuts opponents.

The Sword of Justice Ability is nice both flavorful and mechanically, with the fresh spin on effects that increase damage. It actually has some nice synergy with Whirlwind Blade, since you can switch out from being revenge KO’d, as to build up the precious [F] Energy attachments from the Bench. That does, however, make the combination rather powerful. You’ll easily be able to hit 120+ with the right support, but without Guzma/Lysandre, your opponent will never be able to take down your monster (and instead promote walls up-front). It’s a very difficult strategy to fight against; even Spinning Turn Donphan managed to terrorise a format, and it’s output maxed at 120.

Wording errors:
- Energy attached to a Pokemon is never considered an “Energy card”, but rather just an “Energy”. If you were intending to limit this damage increase to Basic [F] Energy only, then you should say as such instead. (-1pt)
- There should be a “to your opponent’s Active Pokemon” after “more damage”. (-2pts)

NO. 191 Seed Pokémon HT: 1'00 WT: 4.0 lbs

[G] Leech Seed
At the end of your opponent's next turn, put 1 damage counter on the Defending Pokémon and heal 10 damage from this Pokémon.

[G] [C] Seed Bomb 50
Flip a coin. If tails, this attack does nothing.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: None
Retreat: [C] [C]
Pokédex Information: Sunkern tries to move as little as it possibly can. It does so because it tries to conserve all the nutrients it has stored in its body for its evolution. It will not eat a thing, subsisting only on morning dew.

Some nice experimentation with flavour in Leech Seed, by having the effect happen at the end of your opponent’s next turn! Otherwise, there’s pretty standard stuff here. I am a bit hesitant about the giving an effect to the “Seed Bomb” attack, since it’s been established as an effect-less attack across multiple generations (include SM).

On another note, a Retreat Cost of 2 is strange; recent Sunkern have a RC of 1, and it’s not like Sunkern is particularly heavy or slow, which are factors in developing a RC. A HP of 30 is also a bit strange; especially with power creep and based on previous cards, I would expect a printed Sunkern to have 40 HP.

Ability: Effect Spore
During your opponent's next turn, if this Pokémon is damaged by an attack (even if this Pokémon is Knocked Out flip a coin. If heads, choose 1 Special Condition. The Defending Pokémon is now affected by that Special Condition.

[Y][C][C] Strength Sap 20x.
This attack does 20 damage for each of your Pokémon in play. Heal from this Pokemon the same amount of damage you did to your opponent’s Active Pokemon.

[Y][Y][C] Hypnosis GX: 150 damage
Your opponent can't play any cards from their hand during their next turn. (You can't use more than 1 GX attack in a game.)

Weakness: Metal (x2) Resistance: Darkness (-20) Retreat: [C]
It emits flickering spores that cause drowsiness. When its prey succumb to sleep, this Pokémon feeds on them by sucking in their energy

There seems to be a lot going on here! Effect Spore is a slight deviation from the standard “if this Pokemon is damaged” effect, which is nice. The flexibility is, however, much too powerful. The optimal choice will nearly always be to Paralyze your opponent, which prevent them from attacking and retreating, effectively securing a KO the next turn. Combined with Strength Sap, which allows you to heal off the damage that you would have received, makes this effect even more potent.

Strength Sap itself is probably trying to do too much. You’ve got your Circle Circuit effect mashed together with a pretty decent healing effect, and those effect don’t really seem to correlate with each other. Hypnosis is also doing a bit too much. I’ve noticed that GX attacks either dish out quite a bit of damage, or has a rather powerful effect. This attack is trying to do both.

On another note, the Retreat Cost is a bit low. Printed Shiinotic have a cost of 2, and if the RC was going to change because this is a Shiinotic-GX, then it would probably increase instead of decrease.

[G][G][C][C] Cotton Guard - 60
During your opponent's next turn, any damage done to this Pokémon by attacks is reduced by the same amount of damage you did to the Defending Pokémon (after applying Weakness and Resistance).

Weakness: [R] (x2)
Resistance: [W] (-20)
Retreat Cost: 0
Like the wind, it can slip through any gap, no matter how small. It leaves balls of white fluff behind.

Great to see your entry, Double! I can’t help but wonder if “Alone on the Wind” should be “Alone in the Wind”, but it doesn’t really matter either way.

Alone in the Wind is a nice flavourful gimmick that works great with the awkward cost of Cotton Guard. It’s not too powerful either, due to the natural risk of having no Benched ‘mons. It forces some nice circular synergy with the attack: attack to reduce damage to survive each turn, so you don’t have to Bench more Pokemon, so you can attack for free.

I also quite like the effect for Cotton Guard that you’ve got going here. It’s quite a fresh and unique spin on an effect that would otherwise be rather average. I am a little hesitant about naming this effect “Cotton Guard”, however, since that effect has been established in the official TCG, including in the SM-era. A four Energy cost attack on a Whimsicott is also a bit strange, since Whimsicott generally has cheap attacks.

Height: 0'08 Weight: 2.6 lbs #406 Bud Pokémon

I’m quite liking the flavour that you’ve got going here, especially Helicopter Leaf! That’s particularly nice! Leaf Guard is a rather different way to reduce damage; otherwise, there’s some new effect combinations here, but nothing particularly that stands out. I think budding is trying to pull off a bit too much, as I’m not really seeing much correlation, and I honestly think the card could be better off without it.

On another note, Leaf Guard is actually really quite powerful. A few Battle Compressors and other discards, and you could easily have 12 + Energy in your discard by your first couple of turns, and be preventing 120+ damage with relative ease. Your Budew will be virtually immune. ;P

Wording errors:
- Energy in your discard pile should be referred to as “Energy cards”. (-1pt)
- Special Energy can’t be [G] type when not attached to a Pokemon, so the “Basic” in “Basic [G] Energy” is redundant and unnecessary. (-1pt) [for confirmation of the wording, see Volcanion-EX]

Some nice flavour you’ve got here, Prof. Otherwise, there isn’t anything particularly new or unique; just a fairly standard group of effects. There’s some obvious synergy between Overgrow and the GX attack, which is nice.

Otherwise, Overgrow seems a tad overpowered, since the margin in which the effect can activate is actually quite large (120+ HP). Similarly, it’s a bit strange that Full Blown Impact has a cost of only three Energy - and none that are [G] - considering its damage output.

You weren’t kidding when you said this card was complicated! In fact… it’s far too complicated. The best cards are often the simpler ones, alright? :)

Spring Wind has a rather strange Energy cost. Five [G] Energy is massive for an average effect like that, let alone one that dishes out 10 damage only, and let alone on a Sawsbuck, where you might see up to 3 Energy in a cost at most. The HP is also too high for a Sawsbuck.

I quite like the idea you’re going for in Emergency Synthesis! The flavour is quite fitting, and it is a unique effect for closing the gap if you’re behind. It works nicely with Energy Cyclone as well, which is great. That said, the effect itself is actually pretty broken. Firstly, it stacks, meaning you could be attaching a massive 6+ Energy a turn with the right engine. Additionally, most Pokemon will be able to attack after one or two Energy attachments, even if the attack isn’t that useful, meaning you’re gaining an advantage virtually for free. Even then, being able to attach 3 Energy via an Ability whenever your opponent tries to KO you is still pretty big.

Hurricane Force is also pretty neat. It’s not useful against any non-GX deck, and although the decision can be difficult for your opponent to make, the attack can still be combated rather easily with any sort of Ability-based draw-power. Even then, there’s no guarantee that your opponent won’t draw into a draw-power card and cause your GX attack to be all for naught anyway, making it a rather balanced design.

Regarding your wording, I would recommend looking up references for your effects. It will save you missing those silly wording mistakes and boost your score up. :)

Aha! I haven’t seen a non-SM-era card yet, so this is a nice change!

Armor-Plated doesn’t strike me as anything new, although the increase in HP is a nice twist. I do think the Ability creeps in power a tad, though. Looking at official Pokemon SP, even Pokemon like Garchomp or Regigagas have 80HP and 100HP respectively, whereas the Ability will push Chesnaught’s to 100. I would imagine that a Chesnaught Pokemon SP would have had about 80 or 90 HP at the most, even without the Ability.

Spiky Slam works nicely with the Ability. It’s particularly nice in the balancing department, as the cost is large (and suitable for a Chesnaught), and discarding those Tools will reduce that precious HP.

An Ability that lets you put damage counters on your own Pokemon? Well, that’s new! I just… don’t see the point of it. It has no synergy with your other attack, and it’s certainly unique if it’s meant to balance, but using an Ability to do that is a rather strange.

Insanity Hammer forcing you to repeatedly use the attack is also rather interesting. It reminds me of the canonical Giga Impact. I suppose that it’s intended to lock you into using Insanity Hammer with no way to break out of it (beyond switching), although I would have liked to see it played around with more. Honestly, both effects on different cards with a second effort more tailored to it would have given you some great points, but this combination just doesn’t make sense to me.

On a different note, I would say 200 HP is too high. Sure, Regigigas creeped 40 HP, but on the other hand, Wailord had not HP increase at all, flatlining at 200. I would say Chesnaught would hit somewhere between 170 or 190, but not the same as Wailord.

Wording errors:

- “active” should be “Active”. (-1pt)
- “has enough Energy attached to it to use Insanity Hammer” should be “has the necessary Energy to use Insanity Hammer”. (-2pts) [Ref: Kecleon PLF].
- I’m not exactly sure how this would be worded, but I know that “and has not already used an attack during this turn” is not right. For one, it isn’t “this turn” at the “end of your next turn”. I’d imagine it’d be worded something like “and did not attack during that turn”. (-2pts)

LEVEL-UP (Put onto Sceptile)

Poké-POWER - Forest Glider
Once during your turn (before your attack), you may discard a card from our hand. If you do, switch your Active Pokémon with 1 of your Benched Pokémon. This power can't be used if Sceptile is affected by a Special Condition.

[G][G][G][G] Power Sniper
Choose 1 of your opponent's Pokémon. This attack does 80 damage to that Pokémon. (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon). Move 2 [G] energy attached to Sceptile to one of your Benched Pokémon.

[Put this card onto your Active Sceptile. Sceptile Lv.M can use any attack, Poké-Power, or Poké-Body from its previous Level.]

Weakness - [R] +40
Resistance -
Retreat Cost - [C][C][C]

I like your solution to the Mega Pokemon mechanic, Drac! It’s what they should have done in the first place asdfghjkl

I am quite liking the flavour you’ve got going here, especially “Forest Glider”. The effect itself isn’t anything particularly new, although the discarding a card is a nice touch. Three other Lv.Xs have attacks quite similar to Power Sniper, although with more significant drawbacks. That said, Power Sniper requiring 1 more Energy and moving 2 Energy away balances it out nicely.

Nice to see you back, Pidove!

Flavour is nice as per normal! Blooming Garden isn’t anything particularly new, being done before for [Y]-types in a Florges, while Quiver Dance is your standard run-of-the-mill deck search. I do however think that searching your deck for 4 cards for a single [C] is a bit of a power creep; you could probably get away with 3 now-a-days, but not 4 (yet). I do like the choice to make Quiver Dance cost [C] instead of [G], to keep it in check alongside that Ability.

[G][G][G] Reckless Taxi 100

Weakness: [R] x2
Resistance:
Retreat Cost: [C][C][C]

Crazy Munching is a rather intriguing ability, although I’m struggling to find much use for it. It’s not that useful as an anti-Yveltal effect, since when deciding whether to reduce attached Energy (and thus damage done to you) or to attack, you’re going to choose attack 95% of the time. Any remaining usefulness would be as a tool remover, and a rather crude one at that, which then begs the question of why not returning the Tool to your hand (which would also discard Team Flare tool)? It just seems highly niche, more so than even other rather niche Abilities and effects that have been officially printed.I probably would have like to see the Ability interact with the attack somehow.

Reckless Taxi has great flavour, and I like how your opponent switches Gogoat out for you. I do, however, question whether giving your opponent the option to switch Gogoat after you switch their Active makes sense with the flavour. I just can’t see a reckless Gogoat staying in their starting position if it was to be taxing other Pokemon around.

Weakness: [F] x2

A Prism Star! This will be interesting to judge!

Forbidden Fruit is some interesting exploration of design space, somewhat reminiscent of Gladion and that card’s interaction with Prize cards, actually. That said, I think the exploration went a tad too far. This design breaks that unwritten yet very real rule: cards should never leave the Lost Zone in any way, period. Otherwise, what makes it any different to the discard pile?

Gusty Flap is fairly standard for an effect, although still rather elegant and flavourful. I am a little hesitant about the power levels, since three cards for [G] is quite a lot, and especially potent if you can keep your opponent at bay and pull multiple attacks off. The only reason that I’m letting this pass is because this of the Prism Star rule, which means one would have to play carefully, as one wrong move and you won’t be able to touch Tropius again. (It would, of course, be a different story if Pokemon could use attacks from Pokemon in the Lost Zone as in the HGSS-era, but I don’t see that happening in this era.)

The idea of a Kartana physically attaching itself to a living creature
is horrifying and I feel bad for what ever gets a paper cut from
Kartana.
Creativity/Originality: 13/15
The ability is pretty good (for you) turning a lot of 2hkos into
1hkos. The idea of a Pokemon turning itself into a tool to further
your game is pretty cool I wish we could see more cards like it with
the massive number of object based Pokemon.

Wording: 13/15

more,” (Ultra Necrozma-GX FLI 140) -2 points

Fonts and Placement: 9/10
Flavor text isn’t normally italicized -1 point
Believability/Playability: 2/5
I feel like while the restriction of 8 or more prizes does help
balance it out +80 damage is pretty high especially when this attaches
to the opponent allowing you to still use a Choice Band. Seeing how
this card can be searched with level ball and could easily work itself
into any deck that has the extra space I could see it being one of the
highest used support cards for hyper offensive decks and make lower HP
starting cards a major liability to use.

The Weakness and Resistance for Fairy type cards is normally weak
to Metal and resist Darkness, I understand where you’re coming from
using alternate VG Weaknesses and Resistances. Also, I feel the coin
flip isn’t needed as not only does Morelull UPR 92 auto sleep but you

have a 50% chance of putting them to sleep and a 25% chance of them
staying asleep by your next attack.

used or universally good but a versatile support card the combined
with other cards could easily use Shaymin to its fullest

Aesthetics: 5/5
This is what a FA should be instead of a seemingly stiff pokemon

more with the Gold FA EX cards (which were probably the best FA’s of
the XY era)

I find it weird how Roserade, a grass/poison type just like Venusaur,
seemingly never has a Water resistance. The card itself seems like a
massive pain to fight against especially during early set up
Creativity/Originality: 14/15
These are two extremely interesting attacks that both have their
own uses in the BW-XY meta. Tear out can be used with a few lock
decks, Chaos Root can massively mess with decks using DCE attackers by
putting DCE’s on your opponent’s Shaymin/Jirachi forcing their hand by

making them waste a turn attacking with Shaymin or keeping one of
their vital resources locked onto a 2-prize bench sitter

Believability/Playability: 4/5
Something like this would be an automatic inclusion in every
evolution deck. While not making any specific deck BDIF it would give
evolution decks a boost against the big basics of the BW-XY meta
