At the start where Ash was battling the pirate guy, He sent out Pinsir, Venomoth And GOLEM. Pikachu then used thunderbolt or something and knocked out the 3 of them. An electric attack wont harm a Golem, its a rock/GROUND type.

Ash even used a thundershock on Geodude in Brocks gym and wiped it out in one hit. First season didn't seem to listen to the rules.=P
This mistake has appeared a few times in the anime. It seems that what applies in the games is not the same as in the anime. The very first time I played yellow I had only ever seen the anime and I sent out pikachu while I was battling Brock thinking it would work. Needless to say I had no attacks that worked against it until it learnt quick attack.
I noticed a couple of pikachu's mistakes like volt tacle being used on team rocket and pikachu does not show damage after using the attack and scott said in one of the episode that if used too many times it can wear a pokemon out pretty quickly.
