Ruling Ludicolo

I was playing against a ludicolo on platinum prelease.
I had a combee out who had 30 hp left. Ludicolo used best dance. It says: After doing damage, remove from ludicolo the number of damage counters equal to the damage done to the defending pokemon. Ludicolo can't use best dance next turn."
My opponent (piplup234) used it and knocked out my combee. We wern't sure whether he gets to take 60 hp back or 30 hp, scince that is all he did. We asked the judje and they said he gained 60, That call determined the game in favor of him. was this call correct?
 
Damage doesn't stop once enough has been done to knock out the Defending Pokemon.
Best Dance is a really dumb attack name, but it did 60 damage to your Combee, regardless of how much HP it had left. So it got to heal itself 60.
 
That is weird. Ok, If you were killing someone, would you continue to hurt them after they are dead, no. Thanks for clarifying, but that is weird.
