Hello and welcome to Golden Balls! Based on the mildly successful UK TV show of the same name, Golden Balls involves Mafia/Werewolf style discussion as well as Pokémon battling in fairly quick 4 player games. Thanks to @Celever for helping me adapt this from the TV!

Rules

Setup

At the start of the game, 12 golden balls containing Pokémon are randomly withdrawn from the Golden Bank, a giant storage device that contains 25 Pokémon, made up of 5 randomly chosen non-Mega Pokémon from each of the OU, UU, RU, NU, PU and their respective BL Smogon tiers. No Pokémon will appear more than once in a game.

Added to these 12 balls are 4 Killer balls, named as such for their tendency to “kill” your chances of winning a battle. Each of these killer balls contain a random Pokémon from the Little Cup tier.

The 16 balls are now split equally between the players, and two balls are now assigned to each player’s top row and two are assigned to each player’s bottom row. All balls on the bottom row are revealed for all players to see. The contents of the two top row balls are revealed only to the player themselves.

Round 1
Example of possible setup at this stage:

bbninjas:

Jabberwock:
dELuc55.png

So far, two Killers are out in the open while the other two could be any of the question marks. The objective of round 1 is to vote out the player who has the “worst” set of Pokémon. Players are allowed to lie and deceive the other players as to what’s on their back row to get themselves through to the next round, though using deceptive tactics comes at the risk of losing the trust of the other players!

For example, in this situation, Jabberwock appears to have a strong front row with two major OU powerhouses and no Killers on display. However, if the two remaining Killers are on his back row it may be a major risk for the other players to take him through to the next round.

Round 1 has a discussion phase of 48 hours and then a voting phase of 24 hours. In the voting phase, all votes must be sent in a PM to the host (me). If a player does not cast a vote it will count as a vote on themselves.

In the event of a two-way tie, the two players who did not have votes placed on them have 24 hours to unanimously decide who to vote out (this is done publicly in the thread). If no decision is reached, the decision is randomised. In the event of a four-way tie, the decision is randomised.

At the end of the voting phase, all the back-row balls are revealed and the player who has the most votes will leave the game with all of their golden balls discarded. The identity of who voted for each player is not revealed.

Round 2

In addition to the 12 balls brought through from round 1, one more ball from the Golden Bank is added into play as well as an additional Killer ball. One more very special ball is also added - the GS-ball. This ball usually contains a random Mega Pokémon from the OU tier, however, it also has a 20% chance of being a Killer. The contents of the GS-Ball are revealed at the end of the game. Each player now receives 5 balls, 2 for the front row and 3 for the back row, and play proceeds as in round 1.

Example of ball setup in Round 2:

2eyWvkm.png

Round 3

The two remaining players bring through their balls from round 2 and an extra Killer ball is added. Each ball is now assigned a number from 1-11. One player is assigned to Odds and the other to Evens. Both players choose three numbers from their respective category. The identity of the Pokémon inside the GS-Ball and any killers is revealed, and the six chosen Pokémon make up the final team that the winner of the game will use to take on the Champion. The remaining balls are discarded and we move onto the final round of the game. Players must send their choices in within 48 hours. If they do not, the choice will be made randomly.

Example setup in Round 3 (if the GS-Ball has been brought through):

HxtxxbV.png

Final Round - Split or Steal

The final round has both players choose one of two options: Split or Steal.

· If both players choose Split, both players battle with the final team on Pokémon Showdown to see which of them will face the Champion.
· If one player chooses Steal and the other chooses Split, the player who chose Steal will advance to fight the Champion and the player who chose Split gets nothing.
· If both players choose Steal, then both players lose and neither go on to fight the Champion. Instead, the players who were eliminated in Rounds 1 and 2 battle with the final team to determine who faces the Champion

In this round there is a discussion phase lasting 48 hours and then a choosing phase that lasts 24 hours. The choice of Split or Steal must be sent to the host (me again, surprisingly).

Champion Battle

If a player advances out of Split or Steal, they face the current Champion in a battle, where both the Champion and the winner of the game use the teams built throughout their games. If there is no current Champion, the player who makes it out of Split or Steal becomes the Champion.

After a Championship Battle, the winner of the battle may choose to swap teams with the defeated player.

Additional Rules

· Outside Communication by players in the game is not allowed.
· If the majority of players in a round (both players in Split or Steal) vote for the discussion phase to end early then the voting phase begins immediately. Do this by posting ##ENDPHASE
· Do not quote images/PM's that I send to you unless I give permission for you to do so.
· Editing posts is not allowed.
· Spectators and Players are allowed to like posts (but do not unlike a post once you have liked it).

Signups

These games should progress fairly quickly, but it would really help if players are active for the duration of the game. Each game takes 4 players so the signups after 4 players are in will be used for future games. Depending on how signups go, players that played in previous games may be able to sign up again for another game.

Why exactly do we want to vote out the player with the most killers?

Why exactly do we want to vote out the player with the most killers?

Because the balls get reshuffled, and if you keep the player with the most killer, the likeliness of your team at the end having weak Pokemon like Phanpy increases.

Although I suppose if you get a god like Eevee then it wouldn't matter cause then you can Extreme Evoboost >:U

Oh, I has a question. Can multiple games run simultaneously if like 8 players sign up, or is it 4 at a time?

Why exactly do we want to vote out the player with the most killers?

The idea is that at the end of the game you want to have the strongest team, so getting rid of weaker Pokémon or Killers helps to achieve this. However, voting out the player with the most Killers isn't always the smartest play if they have the strongest Pokémon.

Oh, I has a question. Can multiple games run simultaneously if like 8 players sign up, or is it 4 at a time?

It's possible, but we'll need to look into things like demand, how feasible it is to have two threads for the same game (the main thread would get cluttered otherwise) and other factors.

OK so, I'll get the obvious things out of the way first. Double o squirtle has a real tough front row there so I hope, for his sake, that he has something to redeem himself in the back.

Do we think it's a good idea to all claim what's on our back row? I think it's the best course of play from hereon.

/in for future rounds! Never played this kinda game before but always a first time haha. Looks fun!

OK. Personally I would like to claim my back row last, but there is a very good reason for that, which will be clear when I say it. Would you like to go first? :U
Uh, sure. I have a Serperior and a Celebi in the back.

Serperior: OU
Celebi: UU
Toxicroak: NU
Starmie: UU

So uh, I only partially know what I'm doing. \o/

But uh, my back row is waaaay better than my front row, I got Ferro and Blissey.
Jeez, that back row is absolutely pumped up like nothing else! Maybe uh, a little too good? Considering your terrible front row it seems like you might have to resort to a lie :/
Uh, sure. I have a Serperior and a Celebi in the back.

Serperior: OU
Celebi: UU
Toxicroak: NU
Starmie: UU
These are also two great Pokémon!

Interesting to note that neither of you have claimed a killer. There is only one on show, after all, and Vracken can only have two at most...
