In the unlimited format, where all cards except explicitly banned cards are legal, can Gengar Prime (HS Triumphant 94/102) become Gengar Lv. X (Platinum Arceus 97/99)?

Would you please post the PokeBeach scans of the cards in question? While you're doing that, take a look at the text on Gengar Lv. X and tell me what you think the answer is. We'll be able to tell you for sure once the scans are here! :)

Sorry lol I was half asleep when I asked this last night.

My guess would be that it is legal, since gengar prime's name is just "Gengar". However, it is commonly referred to as Gengar Prime, and that is where my confusion comes from.

While Gengar Triumphant is colloquially known as Gengar Prime, the name on the card is "Gengar". As such, Gengar Lv. X can evolve from it.

The name printed on the card is the only thing that matters.

Your thinking was absolutely correct. Great application of the rule that you knew. Glad we could confirm it for you!
