Filtering

Are there features on the boards to replace words present in posts with others and what are they used for?

Could they be used for filtering spelling mistakes such as "pokemon" into "pokémon" or {d} into δ for everyone's convenience?

It just struck my mind why these things weren't in place and this forum seemed to be the right place to be ask, so thanks in advance.

Well, the word filter is only for words that are, what you say, "18/21+" words. Offensive words will be filtered. The δ sign is typed by typing Alt+2,3,5. People should find that out and since people are too lazy to press 4 buttons instead of just typing "d", I think it shouldn't matter.

Actually, Magic Umbreon has a point. Since WPM can filter words, we can change whatever he types into whatever he wants. For example, he can change "sucks" into "is bad". He can change "WPM" into "the Lord". So obviously, he can change {d} into δ, {M} into ♂, {F} into ♀ and Pokemon into Pokémon. So, we do not always have to type ALT Random Number, and it would be very convenient for us.

WPM: You could even create a threads where people could request for word censorship, like PMD#2 into Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2, SSBB into Super Smash Bros Brawl, PokéBeach Forums into PokéBeach Forums, etc. More convenient for us, more convenient for you.

Come to think of it, we could change plz/pls into please, to make the forums less spammy.

I have to agree with Absol. It would be very convenient. Also, memorizing all the different numbers would not only take forever, as you would have to search for them in the Character Map, they could easily get mixed up. I believe that this would be a good idea.

Can you understand, that we have different keyboards? In the lower right corner of the Windows, there should be two letters. It says what kind of keyboard do you have. I mean, let's say, if you have it on Sl (Slovenia), | is on w+Alt, if you have it on something else, | is somewhere else...

I like the MU's idea.

:F

Exactly, my point. What harm could it do compared to the intense benefit?

plz -> please
teh -> the
pokemon -> pokémon
{d} -> δ
♂ -> ♂
♀ -> ♀
da -> the
would of -> would have
i -> I
{pi} -> π
(c) -> ©
{+-} -> ±

Dr. Ooler :F -> The Master/The Lord
Nah, JK.
I think teh->the
plz->please ...
aren't really needed. Members who type like this should get banned :|

Well, people shouldn't get banned if they say "plz" "gtg" etc. But it would make the forums look less spammy as Absol said.

The fact that you didn't post about your Keyboard being different, how should I understand? :F Anyway, I didn't really read the thread properly. =p In this case, it is a good thing. If only we got something to insert full stops. :/

Nevertheless, if this "changing short forms into real words" thing becomes a habit, it can bring bad to people. Since English is the universal language, talking, typing documents/letters, chatting, etc. with words like "plz" and "teh" will be bad, especially during important stuff. This happens because they are too used to using short forms that will change into real words.

I agree with Absol entirely. It is completely possible to filter words...Why are words not filtered?

I would also like an idiot filter. There was one for SPP but the idiots soon adapted...:O

The very least they could do is set up an april fool joke where "pokemon" turns into "yu-gi-oh"; "pikachu" to "kuriboh" and the mods' names or similar to something silly.

Then your name shall be changed to Brown-Diggle-Diggle-Yellow Eyes Blue-White-Red-Silver Dragon! Yea, I think I am going to suggest that to some mod :p

Indeed it'd be awesome prank :)

Yeh, that would be funny, a good prank indeed.

It should not be used as pranks, but if WPM wants it to be, then lol :p

All pros, no cons. Why not? Even if WPM is too busy to filter it, DRK/PMJ/Pory can help. Also, it may be possible to change SNN into Senor Noobnerd, DRK into DocRobot K-176, etc for the sake of convenience.

IMO/FTW/QFT can be changed into their long counterparts, but IMO plz, i, teh, becoz, etc should not be changed. If it is changed, members will not change their n00bush way of tying, and if they go to other forums and post like they do here, they will be considered n00by. Let them change their way of speaking; otherwise they would be too reliant on the filtering.

I can see what you mean, but I think the Abbreviations are just as good as they are. The extended abbreviations sound kind of strange. With the name thing it could work, but NN, DRK are sort nicknames, they could just stay that way. But there really is no con as you said, but we shouldn't do those such as "gtg" because then people will just be slack with their grammar and let "Spell Correction/Filter" fix it up. It was a good point you made there.

Lol.

Well, if you activated the filter for abbreviations we might even be seeing:

Laugh Out Loud.

0.o

Therefore, as I have said, we must not change gtg, plz, teh, etc since they are not universally known. Words like IIRC/BTW/FTW/QFT are universally known, but n00bs may not know it, so they will spam the thread by asking the meaning of the abbreviations. So, IMO, short-cut abbreviations should be changed to prevent confusion.

Words like SNN/DRK/PMJ/WPM are not universally known, so n00bs may have a hard time understanding what it means. So, IMO it should change. SNN = Senor Noobnerd, DRK = DocRobot_K-176 (Or w/e, IDK), WPM = Water Pokémon Master would all change.

I digress too much, we have not come to the main point:

{d} = δ
{M} = ♂
{F} = ♀

etc. Many people have difficulty typing out the following, I am no exception. My family computer can easily type it out, while my com cannot. For great justice, change!

Lol. I think the filtering should remain for the offensive words only. The English language should be learned and not filtered. =]
