it was stated in a thread that salamence SF and ditto LA are different. why are they different? they both say maximum HP

I actually received a PM asking the same thing from someone else so I'll just copy and paste my response.

Ditto copies the printed HP on the Defending Pokemon. If it were worded that way, it would make my life much easier since I deal with Ditto questions all the time at my league and when I judge Premier Events. I will define Printed HP as the HP that is printed on the card which doesn't include any modifiers like Expert Belt and such. In order to fully understand how Ditto works, you have to learn what it does and doesn't copy. This can all be found on the compendium. There is a link for that in the General Faq sticky.

Situation 1:
Salamence vs Blazeken FB LV.X@Expert Belt

Salamence is able to ignore all colorless energy requirements in order to use its attacks. It just states that if any of your opponent's Pokemon have 120 HP or more to ignore the requirements. This is being fulfilled because Expert Belt is providing the extra 20 HP to make Blazeken FB LV.X have more than 120 HP.

Situation 2:
Blazeken FB LV.X@Expert Belt vs Ditto

Ditto only copies the HP of the Defending Pokemon that is printed on the card. If I had made the card, it would have been worded this way to avoid a lot of confusion. Ditto will not gain the bonus 20 HP that the Defending Pokemon receives because Ditto doesn't copy any extra effects that are affecting the Defending Pokemon. If Snowpoint Temple was in play in this situation and neither Pokemon had an Expert Belt attached, Ditto first copies the HP that is printed on the Defending Pokemon, which happens to be 110 in this case. Ditto then gains 20 HP from Snowpoint Temple. It does not copy the 130 HP Blazeken FB LV.X would have in this scenario because it does not copy any modifiers affecting the Defending Pokemon.~Mark
