Deck Strategies

Hi. I'm a non-newbie but I'm struggling to find a strategy that I like and build a deck around that. So my question is... can anyone give me a list of the possible strategies so I can choose one?

RE: Strategies

Hi Adam!

I've been playing Pokémon (as well as other TCGs) for years and, if you ask me, i can clearly make a classification of deck strategies taking into account three parametres.

1) Aggro decks: This means that the deck has a really aggresive strategy, regardless of the defensive or conservative side of the game. This decks are going to try to have big EX that can 1HKO everything and the damage they deal is going to be huge. Things like Primal Groudon or DarkPatch Yveltal are examples of this.
2) Combo decks: They usually rely on a number of cards that make the deck work once they are together, like the pieces of a puzzle. For instance, I used to play many year ago a deck that was focussed on Durant and it's attack "devour" (B&W era), but there has been many other decks like that.
3) Control decks: Pretty clear definition, those are the decks that are based on limiting the actions of your opponent. Trevenant/Accelgor left your pokemon paralized and in our current metagame Seismitoad Garbodor can completely shut down entire decks.

Of course, note that those are non excluding parametres. A deck can be Aggro and Combo at the same time.
As far as I am concerned, those are the three types of decks I find in the Pokemon TCG.

I would suggest that you decide one style that you like. Do you like to play "all-in" style or do you want your decks to have a more defensive approach? But above all... choose something you really feel confortable with. I am more the combo/aggro player because I don't have the patience to play slow, control decks :p

Hope I've helped!

RE: Strategies

I suggest you look through the Metagame Decks and find some strategies/combos you like (though I'd assume being a non-newbie you would've already done that) and either stick with those, or find cards that functioned similarly but have advantages for their use.

I think there are also two ways decks play - Slow and Defensive or Fast and Aggresive. Do you like to power up your cards for lots of damage Turn 4, or do you like to attack Turn 1 or Turn 2 with lots of damage? You probably should decide if you're a slow player (Primal Groudon, Toad ex) or fast player (Nightmarch, Flareon, etc).
