Ruling attacking against smoke screen

when im attacking an opponent who uses smoke screen and i have to flip to attack him. what if my attack allows me to attack his bench instead. do i still need to flip?

Yes, you need to flip. the card clearly says that if the defending pokémon tries to attack, not tries to attack the active (or w/e)
