Well, I've found a new card can source (the old one got angry about me taking his scans), so looks like these Art Histories are back in business. Upon request of Crazy Weavile, today I'll be doing Sneasel's history. Sneasel has not been a very popular Pokémon to make a bunch of cards from, yet it has made some landmarks. It was the first card to get banned, it is one of the few Pokémon to get multiple EX cards printed of it (in fact, it and Scyther were the first at all). So, without further ado, let's begin.
Neo Genesis
Here is a standard Ken Sugimori illustration. It has a nice look to it (Beats NG Steelix any day...), but am I the only one who thinks Sneasel's claws look a little too big in the drawing? Oh well. This card features the infamous Beat Up move which was successful in getting banned. But that has nothing to do with the art, so let's just move one...
Neo Revelations
This a very poor Sumiyoshi Kuzuki illustration, even for his earlier ones. It looks like a copy of the Sugimori illustration, and turns out very poor. Compare to Kuzuki's far better illusatrations of NR Celebi and DX Jirachi.
Aquapolis
Here we see Sneasel's umm.... "feathers" well for the first time. Like many of Harada's early drawings, this one is a little too sketchy and is missing the smooth touches seen in his EM Vulpix. Not bad, but not too good either.
Promo
This is Rocket's Sneasel. Pretty generic CGI work, but it's done well and looks good. The background is pretty neat, too.
Versus
Forgot to include this card earlier.... This card has very nice artwork. The little Sneasel in the woods, glancing back at you.... Too bad this isn't a good scan, or I could analyze it further....
EX Ruby and Sapphire
Sneasel is so far the only Pokémon to appear in the EX series as an EX, which is quite interesting. This artwork is nice CGI work. Nice background, nice motion, but not real spectacular.
EX Team Rocket Returns
The name of the Drag Off move on this card always makes me smile, as it conjures up an image of tiny little Sneasel dragging off a big ol' Pokémon like Feraligatr. Funny.
But I think this card has a poor center of motion (seen a lot of cards with those lately). If it's moving down, the claws should be facing up. Just poorly executed.
BEST
All of these drawings were pretty mediocre, but I would have to say Rocket's Sneasel (not ex) is the best. It has nice clean CGI work, which looks much better than the fancy new work of Rocket's Sneasel ex.
WORST
Neo Revelations, by far. That Sneasel standing on its side is just painful to look at. Sometimes the tile effect works out nicely, but not here.
I am now using scans from pokeschool.com, but uploading them to Photobucket first. So, if anyone wants to make an art history, just go to pokeschool.com/scans. (You can't find that page from the main.) I think my next history will be Charizard... that guy has dozen of cards. Until next time, see all yalls.
