Card of the Day: Amoonguss from Next Destinies

1. What is the purpose of this card? Does it bring anything special to the table?

After one short glance at Amoonguss' only attack ({G}{C} for 20 damage, possible 50 on coin flip), it is obvious that the only purpose of this card is to spread the Special Condition love. Some of the possible implementations are:

  • Disrupting attackers with high amounts of HP
  • Discouraging attacking and/or baiting the use of Switch or retreating
  • General tomfoolery
If you are considering adding Amoonguss to your deck, make sure to keep in mind that he will be there purely as a tech with a singular purpose to annoy and disrupt!

2. What kind of combos or decks would this card do well with?

Amoonguss would go well with Seeker and Super Scoop up. Though I doubt that your opponent would give you a full two turns to drop another Amoonguss down after seeing your strategy (unless you already have a Foongus on the field), but it is still an option.

It would also possibly synergize well with decks that have weak attackers that need the additional damage / damage prevention (early game Steel decks, Tier 2.5-3 decks with odd strategies).

3. Final Thoughts

Amoonguss is a cute card. I doubt it will see any competitive play, but it has that certain element to possibly see light if somebody wants to bog down the big bad EX pokemon that are coming out. Most probably though, it'll be added into cute / casual decks, where I'm sure it will be fun.

Easily counterable? Yes.
Takes up a lot of space? Probably.
Annoying? Yes. And I love annoying cards.

Card Score: 4/10
Card Art: 7/10 (Look at that guy. He wants to bash your skull in with those mushroom shields.)

1. How does this card stand on its own (analyze the HP, attacks, Abilities, etc. of the card)?
On it's own, this card is not that great at all. The ability is great, while the HP and attack are awful. A stage one with 90 hp with weakness to {r} in a format where {r} types run amuk is no good. The ability is pretty decent on the other hand. Being able to confuse and poison your opponents active is pretty sweet (not as good as poisoned and paralyzed :/) but nevertheless it is decent.

2. What cards, if any, does this card combo with?
The one and only card this combos with is Leafeon from CoL. Being able to drop two status effects on the pokemon so Leafeon can hit for a 100 damage is pretty nice (110 with poison). But other than that... Nothing comes to mind. Unless you want to run it in a Venilluxe deck to have the pokemon die between turns to save the Venilluxe from revenge kill.

3. What role does/could this card have in the metagame?
In our current metagame this card has... no role :( All the top decks have no room or use for this little guy.

4. Give it a rating (out of 10), and explain why you have given it that rating.
I give this a rating of 3/10. The art work could have had more done to it. The card itself is mediocre at best. It just is another card iTCG made as a filler.
