Honestly I think it'll be great either way. Basing it on Pokémon may be a tactical approach to get people to take part since everyone on this site has an interest in it, though.
It's up to you, but we like anthropomorphising Pokémon on this site (just look at the Convicted series of Forum Games) so that's a solid route to take it if you're trying to cater it to the audience here!
