GameStop to Sell “Destined Rivals” Products for Up to 33% Above MSRP

At this point, Pokémon won't make it to their 30th Anniversary.

Unfortunately, the only way to stop the current problems of the card game, from scalpers to the supply chain to Nintendo/Pokémon themselves, is to stop buying the product.
this is unrealistic, pokemon is still the biggest media franchise in the world, they aint dying anytime soon thats for sure

Publicly traded company raises prices on an inelastic product. Why are we shocked? If you don’t like it, why not just switch to buying singles? It’s better pull rates than the gamble of opening packs for collectors and singles makes playing the game much more affordable.
the conversations people are not ready for involve a lot of sad adults learning what the "S" in "MSRP" stands for

We hate you Gamestop
Oh yes we do
We don't hate anyone
As much as you [except scalpers]
Your prices makes us say
PU
Oh Gamestop we hate you

The first Scarlet and Violet set to release ABOVE MSRP and at "market" was Journey Together. Years ago the first few Scarlet & Violet booster boxes could be picked up for $80-$110, meanwhile MSRP on those was $161.64. People only care about paying MSRP when the product is OVER it at market.

You won't be buying it from scalpers. Also thr scalpers isn't selling it for such low markup
If scalpers see that there is a place for a lower price, and people stop buying from them, they will lower prices. That's what i have been saying about LGS, if they sold at msrp then scalpers have no power. It's not a great situation but gamestop raising prices on customers isn't the answer. Every place limiting their product could help but stores and companies don't really care.

I would like to start by saying that I do not approve of gamestop doing this. Though that being said given the choice between Gamestop selling Destined Rivals or pokemon cards as a whole for 6$ per pack or a random unaffiliated scalper selling them for 5.50$ per pack, I would much rather go through Gamestop.

This is because of the following in order of personal importance:

1. Scalpers do not have a direct supply line to Pokémon; any product Gamestop received would have been available at that price to begin with opposed to it being available for less elsewhere.

2. Gamestop's packs will have a added level of trust when being bought to know they were not tampered with.

3. Buying from scalpers will fund them to allow them to continue their actions in future sets.

4. Hopefully, if enough people take a stand to show they would rather spend more to buy from a store than from scalpers they will move on to a different thing allowing for regular people to buy MSRP at the locations they picked clean.

So another words, we guarantee ourselves to pay scalper’s pricing? That’s a win to you? Please explain.

No, we just need to pay the market price. And when that's above msrp, then that's the market price. If a store is selling under the market price like gamestop did, you can expect people are buying as much as they can and resell them for the market price.

Genuinely depressing to see so many people getting complacent with this markup.

Sad to see scalpos just buying product up no matter the cost, and Pokemon fans following suit just to get something. We can't trust retailers and we can't even trust our LGS who are WAY WORSE than Gamestop right now.

The reason I personally never collected Marvel/DC Trading Cards despite wanting them badly was the absurd price tag on them for 5 card packs. They were treated as a high dollar luxury collectible which was always absurd to me. I refuse to pay even more for Pokemon TCG packs, especially with how horrendous those pull rates are for the cost. My LGS pulls the excuse "It's just the tariffs" and I call BS immediately since I don't see other TCG packs going for $12-$20 a pack. This is a Pokemon up-charge and they're being just as slimey as the scalpos.

this wouldn't be an issue if Pokemon would print MORE F'N PRODUCT!

Scalping only exists because there is a limit to the product.
We certainly didn’t have this issue back in eras such as EX Ruby & Sapphire, and there was far less product back then. I think other factors are also at play. Pokémon is far more popular than it ever was in 2003.

There’s always going to be a limit to the product. No matter how much they print, that number is going to be finite.

I am surprised, however, that fewer cards were printed in 2024 than in 2023. You would think that during these times, they would be printing more and not less.

People are acting like we can turn on the burners and MAGICALLY print to demand. It dosen't work like that, and I'm tired of saying it's not.

Considering everything is selling out instantly I don’t see how you reach this conclusion. You may not make it to the 30th anniversary, and who knows, I may not either the way things are going, but Pokémon will be more than fine.
