If people are having any doubts about the names of the gym leaders, "Grant" is derived from "granite" (Rock-type) and "Clemont" contains the word "lemon" (just like Citron, this is a reference to lemons, which is likely a reference to his hair color and the type he uses, Electric).

Xerneas is called the Life Pokemon. Yveltal is called the Destruction Pokemon. I don't think there's any debate at this point on whether life and death is the the main motif.
