Welcome to the May 2021 round of the Create-a-Card!

This month’s theme is Extreme Heights.

Through 8 regions and nearly 900 species, Pokémon run the gamut from the enormous to the minute. For this round of the competition, you’ll choose a Pokémon either 1’00” or smaller, or 10’00” or bigger, and design your card around that Pokémon. There are no other restrictions — let your creativity run wild!

A list of Pokémon sorted by size can be found here. Any Pokémon with an exact Pokédex height of 1’00” or smaller, or 10’00” or bigger, is fair game.

This competition has two sections, text-based and image-based fakes. For text-based fakes, all you have to do is create a card in text form and post it in here! For image-based fakes, you’ll need the help of some software to let your creations come to life. But one thing remains important between both of them: your cards must be completely original!

Registration

  • To sign up you must reply to the thread below. Make sure to include whether you’re in for text or image-based fakes!
    --
  • You may register with a partner and work together on the same card. This way each member can use their different talents and combine their skills, especially if one of you is an artist and the other is a TCG player. (Feel free to post in the thread that you’re looking for a partner if you want one.)
    --
  • We have a total of 15 spaces available for text-based entries and 15 for image-based. If you’ve never done an image-based card before, now is a great time to learn! PokéBeach has many card blanks and guides available for use.

Judging

--------
Text-Based
--------
  1. Creativity/Originality
We’re all tired of effectless attacks! Without images, part of the intrigue with text-based fakes is the creativity of Pokémon Power / Body / Ability / attack effects. Let’s see something cool and new!
    Total: 20 points
    ---
  2. Wording
Proper wording is key in designing any fake card. Try to ensure wording is correct for the era of card you choose as card wording has changed many times over the years. Naturally, grammar and spelling are also taken into consideration.

Text-based fakers may format their entries any way they choose, but for those who are new or would like a guideline to follow, this is a simple formatting guideline you can follow:

    Pokémon – Type – HP50
Stage 1 – Evolves from Pokémon

NO. 000 [Name] Pokémon HT: 1’11” WT: 111.1 lbs.

    Ability: Name
    Ability Effect

    [R][C] Attack 20
    Attack Effect

    Weakness: Fire (x2)
    Resistance: Psychic (-20)
    Retreat: [C] [C] [C]
    Flavor Text

    Total: 15 points
    ---
  3. Believability/Playability
Text-based fakes rely heavily on their believability. Think of your entries as if they were real cards. Try to avoid those 400 HP monsters which do 200 damage for [R]! Proper type (unless Delta-species), Pokédex information, and ballpark HP will also be taken into consideration. We will assume that your card is being created for the current TCG era unless otherwise stated, so if you are making a card for a previous era, you must mention this in your entry post.
    Total: 15 points
Max Points: 50

--------
Image-Based
--------
  1. Creativity/Originality
This is a given. With the proper photo editing tools, let your imagination run wild! Among other things, this can involve innovating new mechanics, envisioning new card interactions, and exploring exciting gameplay potential or other design space.
    Total: 15 points
    ---
  2. Believability/Playability
Believability and playability are both integral to the realism of a fake. A card’s playability is its power level — try not to be overpowered or underpowered for the era you’re designing in! For believability, proper type (unless delta-species), Pokédex information, ballpark HP, and so on will be taken into consideration.
    Total: 15 points
    ---
  3. Wording
Proper wording is key in designing any fake card. Try to ensure wording is correct for the era of blank you choose, as card wording has changed many times over the years. Naturally, grammar and spelling are also taken into consideration.
    Total: 10 points
    ---
  4. Fonts and Placement
Correct fonts (which may change era by era) are imperative when creating realistic fakes — even for custom blanks, fonts in line with the convention can go a long way toward making them appear realistic. Placement of text / symbols / etc. is also taken into consideration.
    Total: 5 points
    ---
  5. Aesthetics
Aesthetics is all about how your card looks as a complete whole. Aspects of this category include using creative and appropriate artwork, using neat or custom blanks, and overall having an appealing card creation. Additionally, you may not use existing artwork from the TCG for your cards. If you’d like to use Ken Sugimori stock artwork, you may do so, but it must be transformative in nature.
    Total: 5 points
Max Points: 50

And that’s the point breakdown for this round’s Create-A-Card! @Jabberwock will be judging image-based, and @PMJ will be judging text-based.

We’re always looking for new judges. Keen to join the team? You can learn how to apply here.

General Rules

  • The card you submit must be of a Pokémon — that is, not a Trainer, Energy, or other type of card. Occasionally, we open this up to other types of cards if the month’s theme warrants it, but otherwise it’s impossible to judge (for example) Pokémon cards against Trainer cards, since their uses in-game are so different.
    --
  • For those entering image-based, you must include the symbol here on your card (such as the set symbol) or else your entry won’t be accepted. It was designed by the lovely Nekoban Ryo who continuously creates resources for the faking world and is a prominent faker himself. In addition, we do not allow any image-based entries that have been made using automatic, online card generators.
    --
  • If you edit your post you’ll incur deduction of 2 points from your overall score, and posting your entry again on a different post also deducts 2 points. When you submit, make sure you’re done! If you mess up the tags or have a similar coding disaster, tag or PM me to get it fixed. If you forget to credit someone, do so in a new post instead of editing.
    --
  • Participants who fail to submit a card by the deadline, if the particular portion is full, will automatically lose 2 points for next round (similar to losing 2 points for the current round for editing). If the portion you have signed-up for is full and if you wish to drop out, you must do so with three days remaining before the deadline to not incur the penalty. Continuing to fail to post a submission in future rounds will result in a possible ban from the contest for a couple of months. Please keep a close eye on the deadline.
    --
  • The judges do not give feedback on entries before they are posted. However, you’re encouraged to seek out help from other members of the community! The forums are an acceptable place for this, but you may be able to get faster feedback in the Faking Community Discord server here.
    --
  • Participants should only enter one of the two categories. This is to prevent the potential for an excessive influx of entries for our judges to manage.
    --
  • Artists/illustrators are free to post in this thread, letting participants know that they are available.
    --
  • All entries should meet the forum rules. You should always credit the artist, and never use someone else’s art without their permission — that’s art theft.

Deadline: May 24th (Mon.) 11:59pm PST

FAQ:
  • Is there a handy list somewhere of all Pokémon sorted by height?
Yup. It's also linked in the OP. :)
  • Can my Pokémon be exactly 1'00" or 10'00"?
Yes. This is what we mean by "1'00" or smaller" and "10'00" or bigger".
  • Are Dynamax / Gigantamax forms legal?
Not unless the base (i.e. non-Dynamaxed) form is legal. Dynamax / Gigantamax Pokémon don't have exact Pokédex heights, so they wouldn't be legal at all, but we're willing the make the exception for Dynamax / Gigantamax forms of Pokémon that would otherwise fulfill the brief.

To be expanded as we receive more questions.

Text. I think I am going to try my hand at making a normal basic of a stage 2 line interesting this round.

[Basic] Rain Castform & Gyarados-GX HP270 [W]
[TAG TEAM]

[W][W][W] Stormfront
Choose 1 attack that isn't a GX attack from any Pokémon with 260 HP or less in your discard pile or any Pokémon in play that has any damage counters on it and use it as this attack. (If those attacks have any effects that list a specific Energy or Pokémon type that isn't [W], those effects now list [W] Energy or [W] Pokémon instead until the end of your turn.) (You can't choose an attack that would make you choose another attack.)

[W]+ Typhoon Warning GX
For the rest of this game, your [W] Pokémon's attacks do 10 more damage for each [W] Energy attached to them to your opponent's Active Pokémon (before applying Weakness and Resistance). If this Pokémon has at least 1 extra [W] Energy attached to it (in addition to this attack's cost), remove all effects of your opponent's attacks on each player and their Pokémon. (You can't use more than 1 GX attack in a game.)

Weakness: [L]x2
Resistance: -
Retreat: [C][C][C]
TAG TEAM Rule: When your TAG TEAM is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 3 Prize cards.
Foul Play Zoroark
Mewmew GX
Copycat Mimikyu
Lapras VMAX (kinda? mini hydro pump effect)
Pokemon Ranger (cleanse, modernized)
TL;DR: Make Frosmoth great again.
Frosmoth (and SNOM) are some of my favourite Pokémon, and Rain Dance (or Ice Dance I guess) is one of my favourite Abilities. Naturally, it pains my soul deeply to see both in a single package and still not be successful. The thing is, I don't think it's Frosmoth's fault per se, I mean look at Blastoise and how good that was, but in this format if you miss a piece you are massively screwed. And your average Frosmoth deck has lots of pieces, so this is my attempt at throwing Frosmoth a lamp bone.

Problem 1: Lapras VMAX and Blastoise VMAX, the premier moth partners in crime, are Stage 1s. I mean they are good Stage 1s, but running two Stage 1 lines that you need to set up consistently is...well, inconsistent. So this attacker absolutely had to be a Basic Pokémon, and Rain Castform & Gyarados fits the bill (and the theme!) perfectly.

Problem 2: even with the added consistency of your main attacker being a Basic, you need something to do if you go second or if you happen to wiff your combo. Originally this had a draw Ability that let you draw each time you attach W Energy (so if you really wanted to you could draw like 12 cards essentially for free and suffer the consequences of not having Energy left) but that required Frosmoth already out and didn't really help all that much. Then it became a Net Ball-esque Ability to help set up, then recycling, then it was scrapped completely.

From that was born Typhoon Warning GX, the child of Storm Watch (the og Ability), and Castform's contribution to the team. Technically it doesn't help you set up Frosmoth or another attacker, but it makes it so that you don't really need to get everything T2 because most of the time you want to use this instead. It's a mini Hydro Pump effect because honestly that's the attack every Water attacker ever gets, and I was tired of that but didn't want to get rid of attach more for more damage completely. 10 is a very small modifier but it's still nice considering it's on top of whatever your attack does, and if you need to you can still stack W Energy and call it a day.

The bonus effect had to be useful but not too useful so that you still want to use the GX attack for 1 Energy most of the time. A cleanse seems fitting because water washes things away, especially a friggin' storm. It's situationally good against things like ADP or LucMetal where you can pretty much hold your GX over their own, but for pretty much everything else you probably want to use it right away.

I actually got to the main attack last, and historically Gyarados has been all about damage counters so there we go. There were about 5 different attacks before I settled on this one, which curiously has nothing to do with any of them. It may seem odd to have an attack copier Gyarados, and at face value it is, but the theme here is that anything that gets caught in a storm becomes part of that storm and can potentially cause even more damage - and given the GX attack warns of a storm approaching, the storm is now here and everything makes sense.

It is crucially different from MewMew in that the cost is always WWW so you can't splash it everywhere, but in its own deck it becomes really good taking Frosmoth into account. While you cannot copy GX attacks, I think that's a pretty fair trade off all things considered, especially since you have a GX attack anyway.

The restrictions are there because a) imagine copying Lapras VMAX every game and b) damage counters tie in nicely with Gyarados. To top it off, discard pile=sunken ships so it makes sense to only be able to use smaller ones, and damage=in the storm so it works perfectly with the theme. The damaged condition also gives some choice to your opponent in ways to prevent you from copying their big attacks.

And now, the main draw of the card: you turn everything into W. The way this is intended to work is, for example, say you copy your opponent's Full Blitz. You overwrite the text and search for W Energy instead of L, but that only lasts until the end of your turn (so pretty much immediately) so your opponent can actually play the game as well.

You pretty much just use the attack as if it listed W Energy/Pokemon instead of the usual type. If it's a multi turn thing for example: L Pokemon do 30 more damage for x turns; the text does revert after you attack, but because it said W rather than L when you used it, that effect sticks even after the attack reverts to L.

I based this card upon that one Floette we never got for some reason. Long card but I broke it up, and hopefully not too strong since you can only have one.
Floette ✦ - [C] - HP: 180 - Basic
No. 670 Eternal Blossom Pokémon - 0’08’’ - 2.0 lbs.

Ability: Light of Hope: Whenever this card is in play, the Defending Pokémon can only be dealt damage by the attacks of the Attacking Pokémon (The effects still activate but no damage is dealt). Whenever an effect that would deal damage to the Defending Pokémon (from a move from the Defending Pokémon, status effects, etc.) activatates with this card in play, this Pokémon takes 10 damage.

[P][G][C][C] Light of Ruin: 60+
Flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 30 more damage and deals 10 damage to this Pokémon. If tails, deal 20 damage to this Pokémon.
✦ (Prism Star) Rule: You can’t have more than 1 ✦ card with the same name in your deck. If a ✦ card would go to the discard pile, put it in the Lost Zone instead.

Weakness: Metal x2
Resistance: N/A
Retreat Cost: [C][C]
“This mysterious Pokémon, treasured by the ancient king of Kalos, was granted eternal life. Now, it holds the power to both heal and destroy.”
It's not 100% accurate to the lore but we know so little about this thing. I know it's flower can destroy but since it has eternal life I'd assume the flower can also heal.
