Magikarp & Wailord-GX from ‘Towering Splash-GX Box’ Revealed, Special Rarities!

As expected, Magikarp and Wailord will be teaming up in the “Towering Splash-GX Box!”

This is the third Tag Team card revealed. It has the highest HP ever seen on a normal Pokemon card — 300 HP! Unfortunately for Magikarp, it seems Wailord will be doing all the work!

A 240 HP Pikachu & Zekrom-GX was revealed at Worlds in August and then a 270 HP Eevee & Snorlax-GX was revealed this month. Since Wailord historically has the most HP in the TCG, we can probably expect 300 to be the maximum “cap” for now.

Once again, Mitsuhiro Arita is the artist for yet another Tag Team card. This time his artwork is a callback to Wailord from Great Encounters.

The “Towering Splash-GX Box” will release on January 4th. It’ll come with a foil promo card featuring Magikarp & Wailord-GX, a jumbo version, four booster packs, and a PTCGO code card.

In an interview with IGN, TCG game director Atsushi Nagashima hinted that Tag Team cards will also come in a special rarity:

“In addition to the standard rarity, we have some things in store that we hope will make players love TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX even more, so I hope you’ll look forward to them,” he teased.

And in case you’re not caught up with the Tag Team mechanic, here’s info I posted in a news story the other day:

A Tag Team GX card features two Pokemon of the same type on one card. The cards possess much higher HP, are Basic Pokemon, and give up three Prize cards. The Pokemon themselves do not have to be Basic Pokemon — for example, Zoroark & Greninja-GX are Stage 2 and 1 Darkness Pokemon, but their Tag Team card will be a Basic [D] Pokemon.

Their GX attacks will have extra effects depending on how many extra Energy you’ve attached to them. This is denoted by the “+” in the attack cost.

So far we know there’s going to be a Pikachu & Zekrom-GX, Eevee & Snorlax-GX, Zoroark & Greninja-GX, Buzzwole & Pheromosa-GX, and Gengar & Mimikyu-GX. Magikarp & Wailord-GX will probably be featured in the Towering Splash-GX Box since the two Pokemon were “randomly” advertised at an official tournament next to some of the aforementioned Pokemon.

We will be getting six Tag Team cards in our Team Up set. This means more are yet to be revealed!

It’s also been confirmed Japan will be getting Charizard & Reshiram-GX as well as Garchomp & Giratina-GX in upcoming sets this spring!
