In the yu-gi-oh card game can you discard monsters from your hand to the graveyard?

I don't think you can but check their site to see if you can. I have only played it once or twice but as I recall I don't think so.

Rules when discarding cads from the hand to the Graveyard (discard pile).
You HAVE to send 1 (or 2/Sometimes 3-Graceful Charity/Transendent Wings) card/s

Magic Cards:
Such as:

• Graceful Charity
• Monster Reincarnation
• Special Hurricane
• Transcendent Wings (works with Winged Kuriboh only)

Monsters:

• Dark Paladin (My Favorite fusion (I use 3 of this one)
• Sinister Serpent
• Armed Dragon's: Lv's 3, 5, 7 & 10 (I only use 5 & 7)
• D.D.M Different Dimension Master

Traps:

• Karma Cut

You can, but only if card effects tells you to.

Yeah, it's kinda what they said. If you discard a monster to the graveyard, it will have to vary on the card effect. Such cards like Trade In or Foolish Burial are an example.
