Hi peeps! As the title suggests, this thread is devoted entirely to posting random facts! :p The task here is simple, with each post, include a fact that most people wouldn't know! Remember to follow all Pokébeach rules, as well as try to post a fact with each reply. Let's get the facts started!

There is actually no such thing as a Pterodactyl, but rather, a Pterosaur. Pterodactyl is only derived from the genus of Pterodactylus.

Ooooo! A fact forum! Well, I must say that I have knowledge in this area - I'll probably be here daily ;)

A vampire bat may vomit up blood to keep a fellow bat alive, and while we're on that topic, will also look after orphaned young.

Of all animals, only great apes, elephants, bottlenose dolphins, orcas and Eurasian magpies are believed to be able to recognise itself in a mirror. Oh, and of course humans, but I hope you already knew that.

Cloaks were originally used by the English to shield from rain, and it was only until the 1700s that umbrellas were actually used for this purpose.

This is probably common knowledge, but the necktie is actually used primarily to hide the buttons on your shirt.
 
Modern drinking straws were originally made of rye grass, which was notorious for disintegrating and leaving a rye residue and therefore a grassy taste in the beverage. A paper straw was invented afterwards, and then plastic.
 
This isn't the most obscure one, but I love the fact that you burn more calories eating and digesting celery than you get from said celery.
 
The production of Pocahontas stole the majority of Disney animators from working on The Lion King as it was predicted that 'no one would watch something about an animal'.

The final animation sequences of The Lion King were required to be created at the animators homes, after the horrific Northridge earthquake of 1994 in California, that rendered the Disney studios unusable.

The original The Lion King script was titled King of Beast and King of Jungle, had a plot involving lions versus baboons, was written in late 1988 to early 1989 and was rewritten when a new chief producer was promoted.
 
Piggybacking on The Lion King and also going hand in hand with bbninjas last fact, Disney was heavily influenced by Osamu Tezuka's Kimba the White Lion and never gave the original series any credit. The influence is so heavy there was even a protest/petition against Disney signed by many Japanese mangaka.

Actually, only one staff member and/or cast has claimed of knowing of Kimba the White Lion until the release of The Lion King (which was obviously when protests came out), which is why the former did not get credit.
 
-The Lion King is an adaptation of Hamlet.
-For being considered one of the worst games ever ET for Atari it sold 1.5 million copies. To put that into perspective it sold more than Adventure, and Space Invaders at the time. Another game blamed for the Gaming Market crash, Pac-Man, is the best selling game on the Atari 2600.
-Halo 3 is known for being one of the heavy hitters for the Xbox 360's early life, and it was the second best selling game on the system. Despite this it was still out sold by Wii Play(Probably because it came with an extra controller for a very popular system)
-Okami has a beautiful, and colorful art style, but it originally was going to have a realistic art style. This was changed because Clover Studios didn't think the PS2 was powerful enough.
-Star Fox Adventures was originally going to be a game by Rare called Dino Planet.
-You may know that Final Fantasy VII was originally going to be on the N64, and was dropped for the new PSone. One of the reasons for Final Fantasy VII being cancelled for the N64 is because it would require 13 cartridges(That is more games than I own for the system. Imagine how big that box would be.)
-Pokemon isn't the only series that had Rice Balls changed to different foods! When a level was completed in Alex Kidd in Miracle World Alex Kidd would eat a Rice Ball. In international releases this was changed to a Hamburger.
-Alex Kidd was originally going to be the Mascot for SEGA, but Sonic took his place.
 
In memory of Mr. Iwata, I would like to state the fact that he was the one responsible for the inclusion of Kanto in Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal. He also coded the battle feature for Pokémon Stadium himself in a week.

Microsoft's latest OS is called Windows 10 because there are about 4000 instances where programs (including their own kernel) look for an OS starting with "Windows 9" intending to look for Windows 95 or 98. They also couldn't call it Windows One to align with their other products (Xbox One, OneDrive, etc.) because that was the name of the first Windows OS, and it would cause the same issues as Windows 9.

The International Space Station is powered through solar electricity, although there is a rough 35 minute lapse that occurs when the sun is hidden from view, thus causing the station to depend on rechargeable nickel-hydrogen batteries during this period.
 
Did you know out of the hundreds species of frogs, only one species is actually venomous? The name of this frog is called Corythomantis greeningi and resides in Brazil; this frog also has venom 25 times more venomous than a pit viper.

Speaking of astronauts, did you know that due to the zero G's of space, your vertebrae actually separate and your spinal column elongates. Astronauts typically grow an inch or two.

Adders are venomous, not poisonous.

I guess that's my fun fact: "Venomous" means that if it bites you, you get sick. "Poisonous" means that if you bite it (like to eat it), you get sick. There are venomous animals that are safe to eat.
