What is Humble Bundle?

Humble Bundle is... well, Wikipedia puts it better than I probably can: "The Humble Bundles ... are a series of collections ('bundles') of digital creations that are sold and distributed online at a price determined by the purchaser."

These "creations" consist primarily of PC games, but sometimes branch off into Android games, as well as non-game stuff like eBooks and music. These "collections" vary in how they're set up, but there are always ten constants (yeah, that's a lot, I kept thinking of more :p):

  1. Their price is pay-what-you-want--$1, $5, $10, $100--anything above $0 is game. However, you do usually get more for paying above a certain price--usually around $6.
  2. Each purchase benefits charity. What charities they benefit varies by bundle, but their default split is always 20%. I say default because...
  3. ...who your money goes to is customizable between the content makers, charities, and Humble (Humble is shorthand for Humble Bundle, Inc., who run the Humble Bundle). Want all your money to go straight to the developers? Just move the appropriate sliders. Don't want to support a content maker you don't like (or aren't getting the content of)? Done. Want your purchase to effectively be a donation to charity? Slide that slider all the way out, or just click the handy "All to charity" button. Your money can be diveyed out as you see fit.
  4. PayPal and Amazon are always available as payment processors. As of February 2014 your choices also include Google Wallet, direct payment with a credit card, and payment through Bitcoin using Coinbase. Things are a bit subject to change, for instance Google Checkout was an available method of moment up until Google retired it, but PayPal and Amazon have always been there.
  5. You can raise your purchase amount on your bundle page for as long as the bundle is going on, and for 30 days after it has ended.
  6. You may gift any bundle to others. Simply check the gifting option, buy the bundle, and give the URL in your email to your giftee. After they visit it, they'll input their email address, and receive a bundle page all their own. Important: Since the purchase amount is hidden from the giftee, they cannot raise the purchase amount.
  7. All individual bundle purchases can be tied to a single Humble Bundle account. Doing this smooshes together all your DRM-free downloads onto one page and gives you easy access to all your bundle URLs.
  8. Most pertinent DRM-free downloads are available direct from Humble as well as through BitTorrent. The latter is great for saving Humble a bit of bandwidth, and well as ensuring a fast download!
  9. Anything bought from Humble should be accessible for the foreseeable future through the pertinent URLs or your Humble Bundle account. For example, I can still access my Humble Indie Bundle 2 page as if no time has passed, and I bought that back in 2010!
  10. support.humblebundle.com is their relatively new support portal. If you want to send a direct email, [email protected] is Humble's general address, to be used especially for customer-specific issues like refunds or super-duper lost bundles. Quick, general support can be obtained from @humblesupport, Humble's official Twitter account for support.
What types of bundles are there?

As a baseline, let's start with Humble's signature dish: Humble Indie Bundle. This is the one they started with, and it continues to be their most "full-service":

  • It usually launches on a Tuesday.
  • At the pay-what-you-want level ("PWYW" for short; anything above $0), you usually get around 4 indie games, available DRM-free (i.e. in an executable file, like a .exe) on Windows, Mac, and Linux. You also get soundtracks for most of the games included.
  • Purchases of $1 or higher are granted optional redemption on the popular Steam client.
  • All purchases of the bundle are factored into a single "Average purchase" value. Paying over this value at the time of your purchase ("beating-the-average") will usually grant you 1 or 2 additional games, along with optional Steam redemption for the games and their soundtracks.
  • Midway through the bundle, also usually on a Tuesday, bonus games are added to the bundle. In addition to being included in all future purchases that beat-the-average (BTA for short), these games are also given to all previous purchasers of the bundle who beat-the-average; the bonus games will simply appear on your existing page; nothing else needs to be done if you have beaten-the-average. If you didn't beat-the-average and would like the bonus games, simply raise your purchase amount at the top of your bundle page. Important: Since you can't raise the purchase amount of a gift bundle, you might want to buy it above-the-average to begin with if you are buying before the bonuses are added. You never know!
Other types of bundles include...

  • Humble Bundle: PC and Android -- These have a had a false rep of being bundles with games exclusive to Android devices, but in fact these bundles are more like slightly less grandiose Indie Bundles; in addition to the DRM-free Android copies, you also get DRM-free copies of the games on Windows, Mac, and Linux, along with optional Steam redemption and soundtracks. There was actually so much confusion over what these bundles included that the name was changed from "...Bundle for Android" to "...Bundle with Android"! UPDATE: These bundles have actually undergone another renaming, making things pretty clear now.
    • The Android versions can either be manually downloaded as .apk's and sideloaded, or conveniently downloaded through the Humble Bundle App, which itself can either be downloaded from Humble site's. Important: The games can not be redeemed on Google Play! They must be downloaded either manually or through Humble's app!
  • Game jam bundles -- There isn't a well-worn formula for these bundles, but so far, they take place during an event called a game jam, where developers get together for a short time and make some brand-new crazy game(s).
  • Non-game bundles -- These offer DRM-free downloads of content like ebooks, music, and stand-up comedy specials. I don't usually know much about these mediums so I keep my coverage to a minimum, but rest assured that they will get something.
  • Big-publisher bundles -- This is about as far from the Indie Bundle model Humble has gotten. These bundles will typically include games from big names like THQ and EA. The games in these bundles are usually Steam-only; the only DRM-free stuff included is soundtracks, which are all under-$1 purchases will include. Many regard these as the best bundles Humble has done, bang-for-your-buck-wise.
  • The Humble Mobile Bundle -- In contrast to Humble Bundle: PC and Android ("Android bundles"), these *are* just straight-up Android bundles; no Windows, Mac, or Linux stuff to be found. -- These seem to have their own tab now, see below.
What is the Humble Weekly Bundle?

The Humble Weekly Bundle is a series of lower-profile Bundles.

  • They rotate in on almost every Thursday.
  • There are (almost!) never bonuses.
  • Instead of beating-the-average, additional games and content are usually unlocked at a flat $6.
  • There have been lots of different types, but the typical offer is what would normally be construed as a developer-specific bundle, made up of part or all of a developer's catalog.
  • There are fewer restrictions on what may pass as a Weekly Bundle; where in an Indie Bundle a developer would have to have DRM-free, Windows, Mac, and Linux versions of their game, there are no such requirements here.
The weekly bundles are sometimes more niche than the main bundles, but they're all pretty solid.

What is the Humble Books Bundle?

The Humble Books Bundle is a series of, well, book bundles. The main Humble Bundle sometimes got non-game bundles. For the people who love the game bundles, they were usually a "Darn, maybe next week..." thing, while the people who loved the non-game stuff went "Ooh, a bundle of books; gee, why don't we have more of these?" To satisfy both parties, eBook, audobooks, and comics bundles are now split off into their own thing.

  • They rotate in on Wednesday.
  • They run for two weeks, with bonuses in the second week.
  • There is an average to beat, like the main Humble Bundles.
  • There is almost always a fixed price, usually above the average, that has more books.
So yeah, these are essentially mainline Humble Bundles, but for books.

NEW: What is the Humble Mobile Bundle?

Like the book bundles, many people didn't like Mobile Bundles taking the spot of PC game bundles in the main bundle, but others really liked them, and so now they have a tab all their own. The Humble Mobile Bundle is a two-week long bundle of mobile games; more specifically, Android games (vanilla iOS doesn't have the sideloading feature Humble uses to install games on Android devices). Humble stepped into mobile games with Humble Bundle for/with Android, but those bundles also feature PC versions of the games, hence the more generic title here. If you saw any of the many Mobile Bundles that made their way into the main bundle, you know what you're in for--DRM-free Android games that can be installed through Humble's Android app, or sideloaded directly. Otherwise these bundles function mostly like the others:

  • They start on Mondays.
  • They run for two weeks, with bonuses in the second week.
  • After a bundle is over, they take two weeks off, such that the bundle schedule is "two weeks on, two weeks off".
  • There is an average to beat.
What is the Humble Flash Bundle?

The Humble Flash Bundle is a bundle that lasts for only 48 hours. They unofficially started with The Humble Daily Bundle, a mainline bundle that had new deals every day for 2 weeks.

  • Flash Bundles start on Mondays, at 2 P.M. EDT.
  • The type of bundle it is varies bundle-to-bundle, and so far is a bit inconsistent. Treat it like a bit of a lower-tier/more niche Weekly Bundle--you might get a few games from a single developer, a ReBundle of an old Weekly or main bundle, some really niche stuff like the Humongous Entertainment games, etc.

What is the Humble Store?

The Humble Store is a permanent selection of full-price games offered through Humble's services.

  • You add games to a cart, and pay using a credit card, PayPal, Amazon, or Coinbase (Bitcoin).
  • What you get from your purchase can be gleamed by the various icons present at the top of an item's page; DRM-free downloads, versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux, Steam redemption, etc.
  • When you buy a game from the Humble Store, you get directed to a standard Humble download page, where you can redeem the game on Steam or download the various DRM-free versions. The game is also tied to your Humble Bundle account, under "Store Purchases".
  • All purchases are divided up in the same way: 75% to the developer, 15% to Humble, and 10% divided equally among five charities: The American Red Cross, Child's Play Charity, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the World Land Trust, and charity:water.
  • Some games are only offered in North America, like Guild Wars 2 and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.
  • It seems there will be occasional sales in the vain of the seasonal Steam sales, with new offers available every 24 hours for a week or so. These sales might also have "flash sales" that rotate in every 8 hours or so.
  • There is also a daily deal every day at 2 P.M. EDT.
  • I don't really cover Humble Store deals in this thread, as the deals aren't really bundle-y enough in terms of value.
Why should you follow this thread?

Well, you don't really need to. Humble's done a great job at making sure their customer's are well-informed about what's in a bundle. I just make posts here to compile some additional useful information, like MSRPs, and extra resources, like YouTube videos about the games. I also like to post miscellaneous Humble news, like the recent change to Steam keys. But it's all mostly for my benefit; making the posts lets me process everything on offer, and helps me remember those offers months down the road. So yeah, it's all for fun, you don't really need to be following this thread. But maybe you'd like to. :>

RE: Humble Bundles

November 14th, 2013 - Note: The first half of this post was my original OP (haha), about the Humble Indie Bundle 4. Since I'm revamping the OP, I'm moving this old post down to here. Carry on. :>

No one has made one of these yet, so I thought a blanket thread that I'll update for each new bundle would be nice.

If you haven't heard of the Humble Bundles, they are a popular collection of PC (as in personal computer, not necessarily Windows) games sold together by independent developers. They started out as the Humble Indie Bundles, but they have since expanded to a few other things, such as exclusively featuring one developer. The Humble Indie Bundles are still the most extravagant, though, and yesterday started Humble Indie Bundle 4.

Humble%20Bundle.jpg

That sums it up. Supported platform includes Windows, Mac, and Linux (hooray!). The available charities to donate to are Child's Play and The American Red Cross. For all the console fanboys who only give money to developers that develop for their platform, your money can go directly to charity and not the developers. This time, the bundle includes:
  • Super Meat Boy
  • Bit.Trip RUNNER
  • Jamestown
  • Nightsky HD
  • Shank
And for those who pay over the average ($5.35 at the time of this writing):
  • Gratuitous Space Battles
  • Cave Story+
I can't explain it much better than the fantastic videos that are made for each of the bundles:

Bit of an update.

A few days ago, the initial 5 games from Indie Bundle 3 were added to Indie Bundle 4. They are:
  • Crayon Physics Deluxe
  • Cogs
  • VVVVVV
  • Hammerfight
  • And Yet It Moves
These are given to those who pay(id) over the average (currently sitting at $5.20). And with these, the soundtrack for every game was added.

I forgot to mention that these are all redeemable on Steam (for those who pay over $1, due to abuse). Unfortunately, Desura is not an option this time.

The deadline for this event is on December 27th, at 6 PM EST.

RE: Humble Bundles

I picked this up after they announced adding the Bundle 3 games. This is basically a great deal and everyone ever should buy it.

Favorites so far are VVVVVV and Bit.Trip Runner.

RE: Humble Bundles

So it seems that they're keeping up with a sorta monthly bundle, as today we got:

The Humble Bundle for Android! It also supports the normal platforms (Windows, Mac, and Linux). Here's the selection this time:

  • Anomaly
  • Osmos
  • EDGE

And for those who pay over the average ($5.13 at the time of this writing):

  • World of Goo

These are all also redeemable on Steam, and the soundtracks are included as well.

Like I posted before, the Indie bundles are the most extravagant. But this one is pretty good.

RE: The Humble Bundle for Android (and PCs--see this thread for details)

I've loved the whole Humble Bundle concept, and now I can finally enjoy it on my phone :)

Hope they're good games, I like Edge a lot

RE: The Humble Bundle for Android (and PCs--see this thread for details)

Today, Toki Tori was added to the Humble Bundle for Android on all platforms:

For those that have already bought the bundle, this will be on your download page, waiting to be downloaded. There's also a Steam key.

Unlike previous bundles, Toki Tori is a straight-up additional game; you don't need to pay over the average, which for the record, has been hovering around $6 for a little while now.

This bundle ends on February 14th, at 6 P.M. EST. As a note, all of these games have demos on Steam, if anyone needs those.

RE: The Humble Bundle for Android (and PCs--see this thread for details)

What's this, a new bundle so quick? Indeed.

Bit of a difference with this one. For the next 60 hours or so, Mojang (developer of Minecraft) will be livestreaming the making of a--wait for it--real-time strategy shoot 'em up with a steampunk ancient Egypt theme. Yeah.

The game will be made available to all who buy the bundle. Unlike before, all money will go to charity. No developers, no Humble Tip, just four charities. There's no real incentive for paying over the average (for now), but I'd recommend something near it. There have been promises of other fun stuff coming along, so there's that.

Because this is Mojang, you can bet the game will be in Java, which by nature makes it cross-platform. Nice.

I was debating even posting this, but I thought a Humble Bundle is a Humble Bundle. Mojang had a poll to determine the genre and theme a few days ago, but I didn't post it since it didn't directly have to do with the bundle.

Enjoy.

RE: The Humble Bundle Mojam

Fast bundle, fast update.

Mojang's game is called Catacomb Snatch.

To make it more bundly, Oxeye and Wolfire are also making games in this span of time to be included for purchasers. Both are untitled.

And I double checked: there aren't any bonuses for beating the average (still, I'll say yet).

RE: The Humble Bundle Mojam

There aren't any new bundles out now or anything, but I've ended up with a spare Humble Bundle for Android gift. I might be giving it to a friend, but does anyone here want it? It includes World of Goo.

RE: The Humble Bundle Mojam

The games are looking sweet, I'll probably go pick it up tonight!

RE: The Humble Bundle for Android 2 (again, as well as PCs)

So Humble Indie Bundle 3 launched near August last year, 4 near December. Going on that pattern, today's should be 5, right? Nope.

The Humble Bundle for Android 2.

This time, they're debuting all 5 games on Android. They are:
  • Canabalt (not Steam redeemable)
  • Zen Bound 2
  • Cogs (soundtrack not included)
  • Avadon (soundtrack not included)

And for beating the average (currently $6.04):
  • Swords and Soldiers

RE: The Humble Bundle for Android 2 (again, as well as PCs)

Today, Snuggle Truck was added to the Humble Bundle for Android 2 on all platforms:

For those that have already bought the bundle, this will be on your download page, waiting to be downloaded. It's also been added to the standard, non-BTA Steam keys.

This bonus is for all, whether or not one pays over the average. The soundtrack is included, and the original, controversial Smuggle Truck is available for Android users.

This bundle ends on April 2nd, at 7 P.M. EDT.

RE: The Humble Bundle for Android 2 (again, as well as PCs)

Well surely today is Indie 5, right? Nope.

The Humble Botanicula Debut

This time, they're debuting the promising Botanicula, much to the dismay of GOG people. It's also an excuse to basically make this the Humble Amanita Bundle. The games are:
  • Botanicula (MSRP: $10)
  • Machinarium (MSRP: $10)
  • Samorost 2 (MSRP: $5)

And for beating the average (currently $8.65 [yep]):
  • Kooky (it's a 95-minute Czech stop-motion animation English-dubbed film)
  • Windosill (MSRP: $3) Soundtrack not included

Steam keys are now priced at $5; anything below and it will be solely DRM-free copies.

**NEW SECTION**

What will I do?: Hold out for bonuses, and a review from Backlog Journey (will link to on next update).

RE: The Humble Botanicula Debut

And like clockwork, the bonuses have hit.

But here's the thing: No games. Yep, this bundle shines through as a more artful venture.

We have:
  • Osada, and interactive music video
  • Botanicula art book and map
  • Behind-the-scenes content for Kooky
  • HU and Zorya, two music albums by some of the composers of Amanita Design games
  • Super high-quality version of Kooky, and ability to stream through Redux

What will I do?: I'm buying into it, beating the average. Botanicula seems great, Windosill seems short and sweet, and Kooky looks like a fun ride.

This bundle ends on May 3rd, at 7 P.M., EDT.

RE: The Humble Botanicula Debut

Ah, so surely today is something like Android 3, right? Nope. It's Indie 5!

The Humble Indie Bundle 5

We've got some more big names this time, much to the dismay of people who bought into Steam's Midweek Madness this week. The games are:
  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent (normally $20)
  • Psychonauts (normally $10)
  • LIMBO (normally $10)
  • Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP (Normally $8)

And for beating the average (currently $7.27 at time of writing [well worth it this time]):
  • Bastion (normally $15)

Steam keys are back at $1. Soundtracks are included. Ubuntu Software Center support is included (hurray!). No word yet on Bastion on the Chrome Web Store. Definite no on this.

What will I do?: Unfortunately, I bought and haven't played Psychonauts a few weeks ago, but luckily for $2. I'll definitely be beating the average; I've been holding off for Limbo and Bastion.

RE: The Humble Indie Bundle 5

Best Bundle ever. I have Bastion and Limbo on my Xbox, they're both fantastic. I've played Amnesia before (pirated), and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. Any heart for that matter. You will be scared to death.

RE: The Humble Indie Bundle V

The games look really good this time around especially considering that Bastion is included which is an amazing game!

RE: The Humble Indie Bundle V

And now that we've reached the halfway mark, it's time for bonuses:

Unlike previous Indie Bundles, this one won't dare combine the awesomeness of Indie 4 and Indie V in fear of creating a black hole. Instead, we get two bundle favorites, and one new thing:

  • Super Meat Boy (from Indie 4)
  • Braid (from Indie 2)
  • Lone Survivor

Sadly, no soundtracks are included for these. They all activate on Steam and the Ubuntu Software Center. If you've already bought the bundle for any price, you'll have these; new purchasers will have to beat the average.

This bundle will end on Thursday, June 14th, at 7 P.M., EDT.

RE: The Humble Indie Bundle V

I skipped The Humble Music Bundle because I was semi-away and couldn't quite make a decent post on music (though I will say my $1.50 was well worth it for Particle Man, Still Alive, and Baba Yetu), but here we are now with:

The Humble Bundle for Android #3

Lot's of debuts on various platforms this time, those platforms being Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows. We have:

  • Bit.Trip BEAT (normally $10)
  • Uplink (normally $10, tablets only, was in Introversion Bundle)
  • Fieldrunners (normally $5)
  • SpaceChem (normally $10, tablets only, demo on Steam, was in Frozen Synase Bundle)

And for beating the average, currently at $6.06:

  • Spirits

Soundtracks are included in your bundle, Steam keys are available for $1+ purchases, integration with the Ubuntu Software Center is here... the usual.

What will I do?: I'll probably hold off for bonuses. I have SpaceChem and Uplink from past bundles, and Bit.Trip BEAT on Wii. Going up to $6 for Spirits doesn't look really appealing at this point, but who knows. I'll definitely go for $1.

Also, a bit of news: At the top-right of the site, there's now a login/signup option; do so, and you can have all your bundles in one place. Nifty.

RE: The Humble Bundle for Android #3 (includes PCs)

And like clockwork, here are the bonuses:

http://www.pokebeach.com/forums/thread-the-humble-bundle-for-android-3-includes-pcs?pid=2200935#pid2200935

It's the Humble Bundle for Android #1. So, beat the average, sitting at $6.14, and you'll get:
  • Anomaly: Warzone Earth
  • Osmos
  • EDGE
  • World of Goo

You'll also get their soundtracks, Steam keys, and Ubuntu Software Center integration.

What will I do now?: Eh, I already have #1. That really only leaves Spirits for me for beating the average, so I probably won't. But pretending I didn't get #1? I'd go for it, absolutely. That's a really nice bunch.

This bundle ends Tuesday, August 29th, at 7 P.M. EDT.
