Hi all! Before we get to business, you should know that bb is notorious for melting the brains of Writer's Cafe and Forum Games mods with his mediocre writing. Now I would /prefer/ it if I didn't burn through the mods reading capacity like an Australian bonfire, so I've been wanting to improve my writing skills. One way to do this, I've decided, is to write a playthrough. Aaaaaaand since there is only one legit game other than Minecraft I legitimately have access to after my Wii broke, I'm writing a playthrough on Sonic Heroes (so stop groaning :U)! We also need some SEGA stuff on a Nintendo Forum cause SEGA is aaaawesome (quit the complaining Nintendo worshipers :U).

Note that this playthrough is primarily to improve my writing skills (or at least in this form), and therefore gain feedback, there isn't actually a particular challenge like all of you contained 'locke people like doing. Oh, and I also couldn't think of a decent challenge, but that's besides the point. So huzzah. I started writing this playthrough before I anticipated on publishing it here, so you're going to have to put up with boring names like Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. And the last thing before I let you go, I can't right write in paragraphs, so don't expect any >:v Okay, nm. Thena says I need to do paragraphs so it looks like I'm doing paragraphs.

I'll admit, I'm very curious to see how this comes out. I've never actually played Sonic Heroes (though I do at least know of one of the levels from Sonic Generations on PC), but I do know Sonic games (and other platformers) in general, and it'll be interesting to see how you can translate a game like that into a playthrough given the super-limited amount of plot. :p

I like the light, humourous tone you're taking; obviously a Sonic game doesn't exactly lend itself to super-srs storytelling, so you may as well turn the ridiculousness up to 11. You're already using your dialogue to set up characterization of our main players, which sets us up with a very excellent start. Dialogue should be the main way we get to know your characters.

That said, you're really not going to be able to improve your writing skills at all if you're going to continue writing in this style. Right now, all you're working with is incredibly simple and basic dialogue that isn't even in complete sentences, with no descriptions or anything. You asked me to critique, but there's almost nothing to critique because you're putting an incredibly minimal amount of writing into it in the first place. If you honestly want to work on writing playthroughs and improving them, you're going to have to be willing to put a bit more effort into your chapters. I'm certainly not going to say you have to start typing up short novels for each of your chapters like I do, but you should at the very least start using complete sentences and giving us some descriptions. Yes, that does mean paragraphs, even if they're small ones. You won't improve if you don't get out of your comfort zone.

You might wish to take a look at some of One Approved's playthroughs, either his on-going Emerald one or his completed Leaf Green one. He employs a very dialogue-heavy style like you're using, complete with the same IRC style formatting, but his bursts of dialogue are also split up with descriptive paragraphs, to give the audience a better idea of what's going on.

You also have to keep your audience in mind. A lot of people here know what Pokémon games look and feel like, after all we'll on a Pokémon forum, but a lot of people here aren't going to be very familiar with Sonic Heroes. What's the Rail Canyon and what does it look like? You might want to give us at least basic description of the locations to help us visual the scene and give context to your dialogue. There didn't seem to be a whole lot of action in the prologue, but that's going to change once you start doing actual levels, so you might want to think about how you're going to structure that so your audience understands what's happening.

How do you suggest turning the ridiculousness up to 11? I haven't really ventured into highly creative writing before, so I'm quite inexperienced :3

This will be amazing, you just need a little bit more description. Ridiculousness can be given by randomness, but it still needs more. Athena's right, a good way to check how would be to look at One Approved's playthroughs. The Worst of the Worst was funnier than anything I found on the YLYL game.

We land on the beach… with water on both sidea. So more accurately, an island. Seabirds are squawking and palm trees seem to bordering the path, but not growing on it. Talk about fake.

So we past the first 50 metres (it literally felt like it) and reach the first checkpoint. I don’t know why SEGA would’ve thought players would die by the first step :v

We past the checkpoint and run up and around the first loop. We are then confronted by a few boxes - or ruins, as the game likes to call them - that were made of quick work by MtC’s four arms. We run along another loop/bounce thing and find...

Past some boxes, we race down the hill for the fun part. Into a small rock cave we go, and we - surprise surprise - run through another loop. Now /that/ wasn’t the fun part. The fun part came in the form of a cannon :D After Team Blasting the enemies, Luis jumps into the cannon and we shoot straight ahead.

Time to scramble across some more moving sea ruins. Now how do you do that? Easy: run, jump, homing attack, land, run, jump, shoot, jump, run.

I seem to have lost my skill in go beach karting - if I ever had any - considering the amount of items I managed to miss >.> Oh well. We pass the kart checkpoint thingie, fly through rainbow rings and- oh wait. You probably don’t know what rainbow rings are. In short, the character does some tricks and you get points. Win win. Ah, where was I? Oh yes, we flyed through the rings, land in front of the checkpoint. Run /past/ the checkpoint aaaand die a drowning death.

So we respawn at the checkpoint - right before the most recent loop - jump into the cannon, scramble over the ruins, take a rekart, do some spinning tricks and get the checkpoint. Naturally we die again since that has been my luck so far.. So we continue bouncing up more beach paths and reach some more ruins, which decide to fall on us.

Luckily the ruins didn’t fall into the deadly, shark-infested waters, but instead decimated itself on the beach. And, yes, a beach, not an island. Now before I forget to ask, did anyone bring their sandshoes?

Well that’s great. We take a lovely stroll run to reach a cannon on the beach (o_O) and get Luis to shoot us to some bouncers. Over water. For someone who hates water, I’m quite surprised he shot himself into that direction.

<Bouncers> *boing* x6 times

The bouncers shoot us to another cannon (that, for some reason, Luis has trouble hopping into) that shoots us on… more bouncers. Time to endure more *boings*.

We run around the corner and find another checkpoint. *ding* We run down the platform, be tricky and fly through some more rings and land on some more moving platforms. This time, flying enemies decided to say hello, so I got Vom to start shooting them into oblivion. The next one was cleared in a similar manner (shoot, jump, fly, shoot). We do some more running (through /another/ loop) and discover a cube-blocked entrance into a rock tunnel. A few smashes does the trick, and we run inside, destroying enemies along the way. In the central part of the mountain there is another cannon (count 4).

I use MtC to shoot away a few more boxes (and collect a 1-up), and then climb into the cannon again, but this time with Luis. We get shot nearly vertically into the air, land on three or so bouncers, bounce through boost rings, land, grab the the checkpoint and start running. Again. Gosh, this zone is so repetitive >.>

We discover another beach kart to cruise along in. I least I manage to get some good points this time. :U We fly out of the kart and… run. We run through some three loops - homing attacking the enemies along the way - and finally here the sound of the goal ring. We use the blast to remove the enemies, and run along into completion.

And that’s literally what we did. We spam X for boost, collect power cores to fill up the boost and spam X a bit more. Nothing tricky in this one.

Very nice! :D Love the added description and how you managed to convey the level. I suppose it helps that this is the one I know from Sonic Generations. :p I like the system you've set up for describing things a lot.
 
Okay, so we need an Amy Rose. Apparently noone can stand her... but someone has to get the luck of being her :D Fun for me. So... who do you suggest to be the unfortunate Amy? I could suggest Athena, but...

We drop onto a white platform significantly higher than those in Seaside Hill. In the distance you can see a buildings coloured with a white and red scheme.

Much of the start of Ocean Palace is literally repetitive running and looping, with the occasional blast of a door, ruin or enemy. We also are required to dodge the ruins that seem to topple over whenever you go near them:

That running, jumping and blasting continues for a whole minute until we come to something quite interesting...

We hold hands and fly up using the fan’s current, grabbing the items in a few balloons along the way. We reach the opposite ledge, but instead of taking the down route, we go to the left, where a small area was waiting for us. We break a few more ruins, and find a lovely surprise - a 1-up! Yay. We backtrack to the down route and go - surprise - down, dodging more ruins that crumble at our ferocious shadows.

The next area after the down route seemed to be the entrance into a temple-ruin. We race up the stairs, decimate the door and run past a loop. Luckily to the world of Sonic, we were not in for another minute of excruciating repetition, but instead aquatic animals.

For this area we need to use an assortment of cannons (cannons on turtles… déjà vu anyone?), boosters and springs to move across the blocks on the turtles. I primarily used Luis to aim cannons, which sent us along a trail pretty much directly ahead of the starting point. I used a Team Blast in this area as one silly cannon decided to shoot us into a robot party - with shields too, which started to attack us a bit too quick for my liking. Or, my accurately, was defending to well for my liking.

Four or so blocks later, we reach the opposite side of the turtle company. We destroy more robots and boost our way into another ruin. And by ruin, I mean big. Really big. It must be some type of entrance to an entire section of the palace. Effectively, the following parts are more jumping, bashing and running, so I’ll spare you of those details.

After about half a minute of nothingness, we reach a hallway. Without a floor. Don’t ask me who decides to do that. Luckily for us, we’ve got some skills in awkward navigation, so I used Luis to triangle jump our way to the opposite side. We do a bit more jumping/running/decimating and reach a bouncer.

So yeah, this spiky disc rock starts to chase us. The very first leg of this escapade is a loop - and what I’d say the hardest part of the run due to annoying glitches that can occur. Thankfully, nothing glitched up, so we managed to run past that without hassle. We then get boosted across a ravine to meet another rock.

This area would have such as lovely view, if it wasn’t for the flying bird in the way. Oh well. We follow a pathway similar to that of the previous stage. The birdbot dead ahead of us seemed to be dipping about right and left like some sort of see-saw. And going backwards. The bird was also shooting in completely random directions - the bigger threat was the puny robots along the ruin path that liked charging at us. After a short while, the traditional stop-and-shoot area came into view. Except:

Before I get too carried away, you’d probably like to know where the heck we are. We’re in a futuristic green and blue city where cars seem to levitate 100 metres from the ground. And we’re on a skyscraper that must be 1.5 times that height. I wonder what would happen if I fall :3

Anyway, I like quick things. Which makes this stage better, despite its ease. At least half the stage is made up of the blue platforms that increase our speed, which is pretty cool. Oh, and there’s lots of loops. Like the one we run down right now yippee. So we run down that loop to reach some springs, which cause us to jump over a futuristic notice board (which is green) and continue along the top of skyscrapers connected by paths.

We reach our first crossing that was not a over-energised platform. Homing attack a few enemies and we reach the next side… to meet more enemies. Sweet.

I do as Luis suggests and use him as the lead for the foreseeable future. We run up another blue path, and then down a blue loop. Or more accurately, three consecutive loops. And then we run into a booster, to enter our first skyscraper. Except.

You know how I said that this stage was easy? Well, I lied. There’s a very annoying glitch that I run into too often for my own good when running along this triple loops - I generally get sucked to the side and miss the booster all together. Or just miss the building. But either way, I die. Which means its time to do that all again. But let’s just cheat the system and go straight into the building, yes?

Sooooooo… inside the building someone has decided to pull up one of the paths so we can’t access it. Time to search for switches inside doors...

<Vom> You find the switch Luis!

The switch releases the platform (which is not blue) which slams over the ravine with a clang. We run across it, to find lots of rings:

I get Luis to use lightdash and reach the next platform (this time blue) and then find another door. We pull the handle to discover a long tunnel. Now to think of it, this building is abnormally long :U I get Luis to jump onto the tunnel wall using his super suction shoes and start wall jumping my way through the tunnel. No point using the energy platforms if you can jump around the cool way, right? We jump through the two balloons along the way to recieve some more rings, and reach another barricaded door. A quick punch or too dealt with the guards of a switch box, and we were on our way. In the room behind the door we find a pole...

We spin around the pole and shoot across to a booster, which in turn shoots us to another pole. We whip up another wind and fly down another corridor and reach outside. We hop into a cannon and land on some rails.

<Vom> Look!
<Vom> There’s the central plant
<Vom> Past the rails
<MtC> Ugh hate rails
<Luis> *grind*

We grind back inside along a few sets of rails after Vom gives us very useful instructions on how to grind (comeon its common sense :U) and land onto a blimp. How a blimp got there I have absolutely no idea, considering we were inside another skyscraper. We land on a bouncer and bounce out of the building, into outside. Ouch my eyes.

We destroy a few more enemies to open up more pathways (green ones) while running along activated pathways (blue ones). The last leg of the race involves a platform that decides to tilt upwards, cars falling from the sky and an angle of elevation cause that is what Im learning about during maths at school.

We run much too slowly up the elevated platform and reach the goal ring. Took a while.

Zone 2-2: Fake Trees and Cheating Energy

We start inside a green futuristic skyscraper. A green, meshed sphere-thing like those on Saint Basil’s Cathedral looms ahead us in a much more populated section of the Grand Metropolis.

<Vom> Did ya hear about the power plant that is located in this city?
<Vom> It’s the source of all power that PMJ’s stealing.
<Luis> Sweet
<Luis> We destroy the power plant…
<MtC> ...and we destroy Eggman’s plan!
<Luis & MtC> *hi-five*

<Luis> No time to waste :D

We race towards the sphere which appeared to have an entry near the base. We launch inside and coordinately roll around like pinballs.

<Luis> Well I hear there’s more spheres ^_^

We run across some more of those blue platforms, twisted in ridiculously impractical shapes. We race into another building, which appeared to be some internal national park judging by the screens barricading unnatural vegetation. Come to think of it, there was trees sprouted at the top of half of the skyscrapers just before. Weird. We destroy a few robots to unlock mechanised barricade. Much to our surprise, red energy flows through pipes upwards, creating a directly vertical path.

<Vom> oooooOOOooooo
<Vom> It’ll be easier to fly up!
<Vom> *nods frantically*
<Luis> Nope
<Luis> I’m taking this one
<Vom> :V

Luis + co floats up the path, spinning around quite pathetically as if the area was zero G. We destroy another robot at the top of the path, which unreleases small square platforms that rise - of course - using more orange energy. We continue a pretty bland ‘destroy’ and ‘unlock’ sequence for three or so more paths, and run into [the shadow] of a metal cage. With working propellers.

After trying to destroy the cage with Luis, I switch to MtC to use those amazing four arms everyone raves about. Much to our unsurprise, the cage explodes and releases the power core. We continue destroying and unlocking (mainly with Vom) to scale our way up the skyscraper we are presently in, eventually making our way outside. Another green sphere looms ahead, so Luis leads the run into that, causing Vom to get onto the verge of motion sickness (yay). We bust our way through the outside zone into another building. Upon entering, we notice ourselves at the top of a tall but wide, blue hallway. I switch back into Vom, start destroying enemies and releasing platforms so we fly our way through the futuristic room without Vom losing energy. A rail is conveniently placed at the end of the hallway, so we grind on that. Fun.

After the hallway we find ourselves on top of a circular elevator-like mechanism that started rising immediately it discovered there were passengers. Rings were littered in lines so Luis could light dash to his heart's content, as long as we were alert enough not to fall off the open sides. Thankfully we didn’t fall.

Much of the middle section of these stage was nothing is so repetitive that it isn’t worth narrating, besides that one time I decided to get Luis to continually try and destroy a well-shielded turtle-bot (that MtC /normally/ should be taking care of). Sadly, I ended up losing all me rings and not pick any up in time before we died. *sigh*

After what seemed like 30 minutes (but was probably only 5), we reached the last and most interesting part of the stage. The power plant!

<Vom> It’s the central central control plant ^_^
<MtC> Central central? ._.
<MtC> I’m sure you could have thought of something better ._.
<Vom> Well we were in the central Power Plant for some time now, and now we are in the central part of the central plant so I thought-
<Luis> No thinking and more racing! Pretty hard for you, ik
<Luis> The power plant’s energy’s rising, you know

*Vom jumps
<Vom> Eeeek!
<Vom> The energy’s rising!
<Vom> We need to get up there quickly!
<MtC> Finally, a breakthrough!
<MtC> Like, literally
<MtC> We can break through the power plant right up there! *points*

We jump across the platforms laid out in a spiral formation making our way to the top, now wishing that elevator thing was here.

<MtC> Heh, the energy is hopeless in keeping up with us
<Luis> Suck
*Energy seems to jump a few frames
<Luis> Did I do that? o.o
<Vom> And that's why I choose Nintendo
<Vom> They don't cheat

Despite the energy that seemed to cheat it’s set rising time, we make it up to the top without any burns. Luckily. We break through the top of the plant - and just in time, it appears, as we hear an explosion behind us - and race to the goal ring. A nice spot for the goal ring, actually. Gotta love unnatural nature in biospheres, right?

I think this is perhaps one of the worst stages in the whole Sonic Heroes game - so repetitive and boring .----. I’m just glad we’ve got through it. Oh, and Amy's debuting next. Leave a guess who you think she'll be :D

The battle commences on a thin, red steel mesh platform. Boxes are littered on either side of the platform, which we get MtC to destroy, finding power cores inside. As our aim is to knock our opponents off the platform, we then start attacking them with full force power. Unfortunately Team Rose was in Flight formation, meaning our physical attacks were doing like nothing. I switch into Luis and start spamming tornadoes, to blow the flyers off the platform. The level cores we picked up early appeared to be of use,, as success came immediately.
