Ruling Rotation Format Trainers Question

If you have a generic Trainer card that is printed from a series (for example, Heart Gold Soul Silver) that is still currently being printed in newer sets like, Potion, Pokemon Center, Switch, etc. Can I still use that in a tournament?

Does it have to be the current format Potion? Thanks. :)

And do base set 1 energy work in the newer format as long as they are basic?

Yes, you can use any old Trainers that have been reprinted as long as there is no significant change to the card text like how Computer Search was originally a normal Trainer, but in Boundaries Crossed it was reprinted as an Ace Spec.

As for your other question, Basic Energy is always legal.

Just to build on this answer, for certain cards, you may need to provide a reference card of the modern version.

For example, Potion went from "Remove 2 damage counters" to "Heal 30 damage", a pretty significant change. While Potion did end up receiving an Errata (official post print change of text) and no longer requires a reference, many do.

I use this reference guide: http://pokegym.net/forums/view.php?pg=stdformat

It will tell you which cards can be used with an without reference.

Since there was significant change, I can't use Base Set Comp Search at all? Or only with a reference?

The long explanation to this is that Computer Search's text was changed significantly (it is now an ACE SPEC).Under normal circumstances this would require a reference card. However, since you can only have one Computer Search in your deck, and would need a reference anyway, you can simply use the Boundaries Crossed Computer Search in your deck. A reference card would be used in situations where a player may not have as many copies of the current version of a card as he or she would like to use in his or her deck. For example, a player returning to the game aver several years may only one one copy of the current version of Super Potion from XY, but has several copies of the original Base Set card. Super Potion received a major errata in its mechanics and now requires a reference. This player could put four copies of Base Set Super Potion in her deck, leaving her XY copy to the side of the field as a reference. With Computer Search however, this is a moot point since you can only have one copy in your deck.
