I wouldn't worry to much about restarting unless it absolutely affects your starters for both Kalos and Kanto, since any other pokemon can be caught again.

If you are making a competitive team after you finish the game, and it involves either of your starters... I would personally restart, just to get the edge. But, I rarely make competitive teams and if I do, its for friends, not Wi-Fi and tournaments
