Ugh. Is it just me, or do the new HG/SS sprites not as good as the DP ones? I mean, Charizard in DP looks cooler than the HG/SS one. Lugia is better in DP, and so does Ho-Oh.
Discuss the difference between the DP and HG/SS sprites!
HGSS Sprites
Thanks to Charizard88!
There are a lot of terrible sprites in HGSS. For example,
I mean... really? What kind of pathetic sprite is that? Pokemon makes millions, there's no excuse for things like this.
I like the HeartGold and SoulSilver sprites more for some Pokémon and less for others. I think the HeartGold and SoulSilver sprites capture a more simplistic and accurate style (more Sugimori-like, in some ways). Some examples of this would be Charmander, Shellder, Rhyhorn, Rhydon, Sneasel, Haunter, and Gengar.
In addition, a lot of the HeartGold and SoulSilver sprites have corrected color schemes - a much needed correction, I think. Some examples are Ivysaur, Shellder, Gengar, Rhydon, Chansey, Gligar, Glameow, and Purugly.
However, a few sprites took steps backwards, in my opinion. Sprites like Rattata, Raticate, Rhydon, Jolteon, Mewtwo, and Houndoom.
So, I think the main differences between the HGSS and DPPt sprites would be color correctness issues (most, if not all, of which was corrected in HGSS) and style (DPPt games have many that don't look like Sugimori's shapes, HGSS games have many that do).
I have to say, I prefer some HGSS sprites such as Zapdos, Meganium, Rhydon, Steelix and Gyarados, however, I prefer some Diamond and Pearl sprites such as Mewtwo (Mewtwo's HGSS is hideous) and Celebi.
I'm not a fan of any of the Platinum sprites except the Eeveelutions, which I prefer out of all of Gen IV. Diamond and Pearl's sprites seemed more static, Platinum's felt distorted to me, and HGSS's are more 'alive'
Overall however, my order goes: HGSS > DP > Pt
Best HGSS sprite:

I have to agree with the Mew. She's so cute!
Just checked up on the Mewtwo as well...understood. He looks hideous. What
is that? Dragonite's terrible too! (Dragonair looks sweet, though.)
Articuno, Rhydon, Tyranitar, Houndoom, Lugia, Blastoise, Charizard, Venusaur, Pidgeot and Umbreon are a couple more ugly ones too.
For the record:
-Espeon looks like she's crippled in Platinum.
-Espeon looks...weird in HGSS, just stretching.
-EspeonROX in DP.
Wow. Nintendo's got to put it together with this spriting.
Have you guys seen the Raichu?
DPPt Raichu:
Comparing that to HG/SS Raichu:
It's like Nintendo didn't even try. The shading is a diagonal line across its body. The head part is all wrong.
There are sprites that need to get credit however:

Typhlosion's secondary frame is beautiful. The right pose and detail made it right. Lugia is epic win.
I can't seem to find the new sprites. I couldn't find them on bulbapedia, could someone post a link.
I agree with the spprite quality though. Some fake sprites look more proffesional then those.

rofl.... thanks, that brightened up my day XD
You can find the sprites for HG/SS
here. Search for 'em in the dropboxes.
I, personally, don't like Lugia much. His head is smaller and seems more Sugimori-like as Xous said.
Ho-Oh makes me want to puke.
What happened to
Marowak's eye in HG/SS?
In my opinion they are a lot better. And really better. They not only improved poses (although there aren't any good and bad poses, it's based on your opinion), detail and the color sheme.
A beautiful example for detail (and color) I think is Rhyhorn (it looks so much smoother and more like it's original art):

Also, good examples of the color sheme changes are Gengar and Gligar, the colors are much closer to the original sugimori art (most Pokemon got this update, but these two got one of the biggest updates in color sheme):

And yes, they even improved Charizard. In overall HGSS has the best sprites yet, but they get better every generation so. Yes, some did get a big change, however I personally like them, you have to get used to it.
I have seen some complaints about Jolteon and Raichu, my question is; why?

Let's take these two (Platinum's sprite is the same as DP's, the only difference is he's standing straight). I can see what people mean, the face looks different, not bad, just different. Further I only can see improvements; closer to it's original art, better colors. Look at the legs of the DP's, the original Jolteon hasn't such thick legs, I'm glad they changed that.

Okay, now Raichu. First of all, it looks so much more realistic, the HGSS sprite gives it the real blubby-fatty-rubber look it should have. And complaints about the shading... First of all, no this isn't just an ordinary line. It has curves in it btw. Second, this is way better than DP's shading and for god's sake let's take its Sugi art, the same shading, so yes they did a good job on Raichu:

We'd all have to agree that the new sprites have lots of mistakes, such as the eyes on Charizard, and Jolteon; or really bad shading like on Onix and the Raichu I showed in the earlier post. However, there are some that really stand out. Have a look at Kabutops, or Blastoise which have really taken a turn for the better.

There is no mistake on the eyes on Charizard (btw, it has the same eyes as in DPPt). My question, what is wrong with the eyes of Charizard? (the same for Jolteon).
And the shading on Onix and Raichu? As I explained before there is no ''bad'' shading on Raichu, neither on Onix, I only can say they improved its shading.
Kabutops has only a different pose (and colors have gone a little bit lighter)
Have you seen the diagonal shading on Raichu? I said it before, and I'll say it again - It's like Nintendo isn't even trying. The shading is completely easy, and comparing to the DPPt sprite, the latter has finer detail.
