SM5 Sinnoh Starters, Energy Revealed; Set to Focus on Sinnoh Region!

Five new cards from SM5 Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have been revealed — Turtwig, Piplup, Chimchar, and two “Unit Energy,” which are basically new versions of Blend Energy.

It’s been officially announced SM5 will focus on Pokemon from the Sinnoh region, including its Legendary Pokemon. As we previously learned, the set will also contain Dawn Wings Necrozma, Dust Mane Necrozma, a new level of rarity called “Prism” cards, and five new Ultra Beasts.

The franchise is advertising Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon right now, so why the TCG is choosing to focus on the Sinnoh region is quite the mystery. Could it be possible we’re not getting Diamond and Pearl remakes? It wouldn’t make sense to make a Sinnoh set, then focus on Sinnoh Pokemon again if said remakes were to release within the next year or two. Unless the TCG is going to focus on a specific region with each upcoming set and this is the first of a series? But it would still be odd timing to choose Sinnoh now if the TCG makers know Diamond and Pearl remakes are on the horizon. Oddly, the 20th movie also had some Gen IV hints, so why we are getting so much Sinnoh advertising across the franchise’s different mediums right now seems oddish.

Turtwig – Grass – HP80
Basic Pokemon

[C][C] Tackle: 20 damage.

[G][G][C] Razor Leaf: 50 damage.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 2

Chimchar – Fire – HP60
Basic Pokemon

[C] Fury Swipes: 10x damage. Flip 3 coins. This attack does 10 damage times the number of heads.

Weakness: Water (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Piplup – Water – HP70
Basic Pokemon

[C] Peck: 10 damage.

[W][C] Splash: 20 damage.

Weakness: Lightning (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Unit Energy GRW – Special Energy

This card provides [C] Energy. When this card is attached to a Pokemon, this card provides [G][R][W] Energy, but provides only 1 Energy at a time.

Unit Energy LPM – Special Energy

This card provides [C] Energy. When this card is attached to a Pokemon, this card provides [L][P][M] Energy, but provides only 1 Energy at a time.

Update: A second Piplup from the set has been revealed! Again, this seems really odd — they’re advertising Sinnoh heavily when there’s no DP remakes on the horizon. Are we not getting the remakes and this is their way of honoring Sinnoh? Or is something else going on? Even if this way their way of honoring Sinnoh, why choose to do it now during a new game release and not in the next set? Something’s fishy… Another possibility could be that originally Gamefreak was going to develop DP remakes, then switched to USUM before the rest of the franchise could change what they had planned. But that seems a little farfetch’d. So I don’t know.

Piplup – Water – HP60
Basic Pokemon

[W] Water Gun: This attack does 20 damage to 1 of your opponent’s Pokemon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokemon.)

Weakness: Lightning (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Thanks goes to Vincent and Jake C. for the translations!

  4. Interesting card. Clearly designed to pair well with Sunsteel Strike and can easily power up two different Solgaleo-GX if your opponent's packin' Benched Pokémon. I don't care for the design of the card, but the mechanic is cool.

I wonder if these will be as rare as Gold Star Pokémon were back in the day? These would be sure to find a niche in a collector's album. I just hope they have new and cool foil haha

A special type of discard pile where nothing can be recovered from it (e.g. no Super Rod, Rescue Stretcher etc.)

I'm pretty exited about this new mechanic. This new mechanic is certainly interesting, and I do like the return of Pokemon being basics all the time (at least this time it's a little moderated.) This way some evolution Pokemon... like... Charazard... might be able to see a little bit of play, even if theit gx is awful. Unless all the Prism Star Cards are Legendary Pokemon, but I'm still hopefull for an acctually playable Charizard card.

I have to say though, this card is only ok. It's first attack is great, but it's second attack is completely awful. It might see a little play due to its first attack, but since you can only have one of it in your deck, I'd say this card will only see an average amount of play, if any at all.

Nice card. A HP 160 Basic Pokémon that only gives up one prize card and accelerates from the discard. I can see this particular card as a decent tech in Solgaleo decks and Metal Silvally decks. I provides som eadditional acceleration in both decks and adds another potent attacker to Metal Silvally. The fact that the card is placed in the Lost Zone balances this card since we do not have a means to retrieve cards from the Lost Zone thus far.

I'm not sure it's too great at all. I think it's terrible, actually. You can only have 1 per deck. And it cannot be recovered. The first attack is situational and the second attack is so bad it practically makes me weep xD

Solgaleo Prism Star is a Basic Pokémon with HP 160 and a decent attack that can ohko Basic Pokémon GX with Choice Band attached. I would not call it a bad card by any means.

I believe this is a great addition to Solgaleo decks and Metal Silvally. The first attack is nice given that bench sizes tend to be larger now with Bridgette as a stable in most decks and the second attack can be used to ohko Basic Pokémon GX is Metal Silvally decks with a Choice Band attached.

I guess that ties back in to the Sinnoh marketing, since the mechanic was also of that era.

4 Metal Energy is way too much even in Energy acceleration decks. It can't even take advantage of the Double Colorless Energy that Metal Silvie already plays. And why would you use this instead of Turbo Drive from Silvally itself, or maybe Registered?

The idea is to use it with Registeel and Silvally GX as an additional attacker to lnock out Basic Pokémon GX and only give up one prize card.

Why do people keep saying this is bad? Up to six energy accelerated in exchange for one energy and one prize. It's also a basic. This is a very good Pokemon for Solgaleo GX. You can put the energy ANYWHERE on the board too, not just onto one Pokemon.

I'm actually slightly annoyed they made it so good... I really don't like the design of these prism cards.

This will definitely be solid with Solgaleo-GX, but as strong as it is, it's a bit boring. Even so, looking forward to new Prism Star Pokémon.

This and Solgaleo GX will be Godly, the late game potential is insane, with a counter energy and 2 easily attachments in a deck that already has a crazy amount of energy acceleration, it will wreck everything 190HP or lower with CBand, early game/mid game it' first attack can really shine through and change the game. Either way this will definitely see play in Solgaleo GX, it being more utilized in the mid to later part of the game, especially if you fall behind.
