Japanese 1st Edition Boxes Now Contain a SR, Lucario and Porygon-Z from SM3!

The official Pokemon Card website has announced that from now on, 1st edition prints of Japanese booster boxes will be guaranteed to contain at least one secret rare or higher! For example, you might get a full art or rainbow rare Tapu Lele-GX or a full art Lillie.

Regular prints of booster boxes will not have the same guarantee. Nice effort to cash-in on something they could just do automatically, considering the absurd amount of chase cards there are these days. But I digress…

This move will certainly increase the value of 1st edition boxes and will mean more fans will buy the booster boxes upon release.

Along with this news, the site revealed the booster boxes for SM3 Did You See the Fighting Rainbow?, featuring Ho-Oh-GX, and Light-Consuming Darkness, featuring Necrozma-GX. The sides reveal the card artwork for Raichu, Kirlia, Morelull, Charmeleon, Ribombee, and Crabominable,  meaning they and their Evolutions will be in the set. You can see a note about each box coming with at least one secret rare at the top of them.

Lucario and Porygon-Z promos will be given to those who purchase booster boxes of the sets. The two will also be in the sets with alternate artwork. Thanks goes to Bangiras and Jake C. for the translations!

Lucario – Fighting – HP120
Stage 1 – Evolves from Riolu

If you played this card from your hand to evolve 1 of your Pokemon during your turn, until the end of your opponent’s next turn, prevent all effects of your opponent’s attacks, including damage, done to this Pokemon.

[F][F][F] Submarine Blow: 120 damage.

Weakness: Psychic (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Porygon-Z – Colorless – HP130
Stage 2 – Evolves from Porygon2

Ability: Reformat
When you play this card from your hand to evolve 1 of your Pokemon during your turn, you may devolve each of your opponent’s evolved Pokemon and put the highest Stage Evolution card on it into your opponent’s hand.

[C][C][C] Zap Cannon: 80 damage. This Pokemon can’t use Zap Cannon during your next turn.

Weakness: Fighting (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 2

High-quality images of the booster packs were also revealed, giving us a nice view of Necrozma’s complicated body design and cake sprinkle eyes.

If you purchase five booster packs of any set from Lawson stores on June 16th (the day SM3 is in stores), you’ll receive a promo booster pack containing one of three promo cards: Alolan Sandshrew, Mareanie, or Water Energy. Both Pokemon are reprints but with new artwork.

A Charmander blister pack will also be sold at convenience stores and Pokemon Centers on June 16th. Charmander’s attacks are Scratch and Flame Tail. This will likely be the same Charmander in the set, but with alternate artwork.

This could be the Charmander we’re getting in our Charizard-GX Premium Collection.

Also Happy Mother’s Day, mom! I love you! <3 Also Happy Mother’s Day to all our PokeMoms out there, even Lusamine!

If they only did this with the English sets too. Collectors are happy, and players are happy.

    And stunning illustrations!!

edit: And that Porygon Z ability can be very good! Can highly disrupt your stage 2 GX like decidueye if forest of giant plants is discarded!

Why does it seem every Porygon-Z card has something that involves devolving your opponent's Pokemon and why does it always suck? At least it's a cool looking card.

Ooo, I like that ability on Porygon-Z. Useful for spread decks, though not likely to see play in Standard (except maybe with Necrozma). Still good for other formats, like Cubes, though!

    Plus, I just love Porygon-Z. <3

  5. SharKing I won't bite... much.

Pokémon Card Lab is killing me here. Porygon-Z is my favorite Pokémon, but it keeps getting these uncompetitive cards. And this latest one... wow, does it suck.

That Ability might seem interesting at first, but there are two major flaws I can immediately see with it. For one, it sends the devolved cards right back to the opponent's hand. That means they can just play 'em right back down after your turn, so you'd have to either put enough damage on something before devolving it so it dies right there or be ready to follow up with hand disruption (something like N) in order to get anything out of it (even then, the latter might fail).

This is exacerbated by the second major flaw: it's a Stage 2 Pokémon. This forces you to either use a Rare Candy or, if you want to use something like Devolution Spray, wait another turn by playing the Stage 1 Porygon2 first. Both of these are a major hassle and a strain on precious deck space, and if you ask me, that Ability's just not worth it.

Do I even need to go into how worthless that attack is? Just read it yourself and let it be its own damning testament.

PCL, would it kill you to make this Pokémon playable for once?

I think Porygon Z has potential.
Okay, you can't drop Porygom and then use a rare candy for an instant Porygon Z anymore, like back in the days (I feel old).
BUT there are enough supporters that shuffles hands back into the deck.
And keep in mind, Pokémon GX are evolutions too (some of them), so in a rotated format with less Pokémon EX and when the focus might be back on stage 1 & 2 Pokémon, this could work as a nice tech!

Did this just make Golurk slightly more viable for Worlds this year? Fingers crossed

So will 1st Edition stamps be returning after being absent for the first two main Gen 7 sets? I'm assuming that they aren't going to be judging by the booster box stock art.

I really hope someone can clarify this matter....

I LOVE how they're making so many Pokemon with abilities that activate when evolved. I think this encourages more evolution Pokemon and a slower meta.

As for Porygon 2, I think this card will be a great tech for decks with Vikivolt GX or Necrozma GX. Especially with the popularity of stage 1 GX Pokemon, a well played Porygon 2 could be devastating. I was just playing against a deck the other day that used Espeon EX's attack that devolves Pokemon paired with Umbreon GX. My opponent loaded up at least 60 damage on my Lycanroc GXs and then devolved and consequently knocked out the Rockruffs. Brilliant and creative strategy there!

This is a fantastic change for Japanese booster boxes. Currently in the SM block, approximately 75% of booster boxes from the main expansions held an SR or better. That'd mean on average, a booster case of 12 boxes would now carry three additional SR/HR/UR cards. It'd be an even better swing for the SM+ sets, where the expected pull ratio for SRs or better is 50%. If included for SM3+, that set just took a big swing towards being collectable again.

    I see morellul...

At this point, I dont really care about the Lucario and Porygon Z, neither the rest of the cards on the side of the box(except for Raichu. Why non-alolan form?), SHIINOTIC GX HYPE BABY

I REALLY hope we get a Shiinotic GX. I am relatively POSITIVE that we will get one because why reprint the card again? That would be a waste of space(same with Alolan Grimer, except they are printing his other type, while Morellul just has the same type), but considering that most GX's in Guardians Rising were ones who never got a GX in Sun and Moon because they had their previous evolutions as well, I dont think TPCI is gonna reprint a card for absolutely no reason.

I'm sorry, I just like that Pokemon so much(although a lot of people hate him)
  15. Mr. Rhyperior The Drill Pokemon. An evolve form of Rhydon.

    • The box - Cool.
    • Lucario - 3 for 120, and acceld by Strong Energy is nice and standard but the immunity effect can be prevented. So, it's 2-3 Geodudes for me.
    • Porygon-Z - Meh! It can be good against Evolved GXs and Megas for a possible KO, but not all decks are evolved-based, unless we moved on to the that evo-based format. The atk is so much underpowered! Don't use that. So, it is 3 Geodudes.
    • Other Cards - I need a translation of Alolan Sandshrew.
    • Raichu - Where is my Alolan Raichu?! Remember, only 3 Alola Forms remaining not introduced in the TCG: This, Exeggutor, and Marowak

Oop. We're likely getting a Gardvoir GX now.

(I'm still the fan favorite tho - shouldn't be a competition at all <3)

Wow, I never thought about that. That's a really good point. So maybe in standard, but not in expanded.

Yeah, and just think about the sweet, sweet wonderland image when you can evolve two Porygon at once! :D
When you hit this point, you may cry... In joy as the one playing and in disbelief when beeing the opponent.

Porygon Z was always ment to be a tech, not a play-around-card or built-a-deck-for-me.
I'm really excited to see where the cut will be this upcoming rotation and how severe it will be!
We really are in need of a EX free meta for the current printed cards to shine.

That Porygon Z is literally the worst thing I've ever read
I don't believe for one second that someone thought "ok, it'll be useful for one turn, then only be able to do 80 damage every two turns", I don't know, I just can't see it
